The Alabama Department of Mental Health

  • is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEPTM) and a co-sponsor of this event/program. The Alabama Department of Mental Health may award NBCC approved clock hours for events or programs that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP maintains responsibility for the content of this event.
  • is approved as a provider of continuing education in Nursing by the Alabama Board of Nursing, ABNP0150, Expiration Date: July 5, 2013;
  • is an approved provider of continuing education for Social Workers in the State of Alabama through the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners;

Beyond Traditional Job Development: The Art of Creating Opportunity: Presented by Denise Bissonnette, M.Ed

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

1)Identify a client’s barriers and determine their needs, interests and abilities.

2)Describe the business community through the eyes of the “entrepreneurial job developer” and create new opportunities for individuals with the use of an “employment proposal”.

3)Develop partnerships with employers, and distinguish those partnerships from the more typical “sales paradigm”.

4)List key questions in order to meaningfully assess an employer’s needs.

5)Describe the importance of using language with great precision and care when making effective and compelling marketing presentations to employers; and,

6)Develop strategies for uncovering and resolving the concerns that employers have about hiring people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

Can You Work While Receiving Disability? What WIPA Can Do for You!: Presented by Donna Bowden, M.S. and Wanda Berry

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

1)Discuss the goals and objectives of SSA’s WIPA’s programs.

2)Describe the services that WIPA project staff can and cannot provide to beneficiaries and recipients of SSDI and SSI who are interested in entering or re-entering employment.

3)List WIPA program staff statewide.

Who Dat Wants a Great Life in the Community: Presented by Susan Ellis, B.A. and Bryan Foxworthy

The speaker will presentthe Alabama Resource Handbook for Community Success developed by the ARC of Shelby County. This resource is useful for professionals in assisting in clients’ transitions into employment. This session will be presented from a self-advocate’s perspective as Bryan Foxworthy is a person with a disability and has made significant progress into living within his own integrated community. Susan Ellis in an employment specialist working with clients as they move into integrated employment.

1)Explain how to access the Alabama Resource Handbook for Community Success.

2)Describe how to utilize the Alabama Resource Handbook for Community Success.

3)Identify how to develop a support team for a client witha developmental disability.
