Zone 11 Pairs Champions of Champions

ARNOLD Javen and Gerald Weinberg, after an early lead, found themselves down 3-7 after six ends in their second round Zone 11 Champion of Champions Pairs tournament at Ashfield Bowling Club on Saturday.

They recovered to 6-7 on the next end after a brilliant trail by Javen, only to be down by four shots on the eighth end. Weinberg’s first try attempt hit out one of the opposition’s close bowls, but also removed one of his with the result he was at least five down after Pearse drew another shot.

Weinberg’s drive with his last bowl hit the target for two up as the jack moved back, only to see Pearse produce another immaculate weight control bowl to drew the shot.

The Double Bay pair dropped a two on the 13thend, but on the 14th held a triple count when Pearse drove to make contact and change the position to two down with the jack near the ditch and a metre in from the boundary peg. Weinberg came up with a resting toucher and after Pearse’s second drive missed, he drew a second on the jack to lead 14-11.

They dropped a three on the next end and another two on the 16th which had to be replayed after Pearse had again killed the end to lag behind 14-16.On the 20thJaven and Weinberg were holding two when Pearseonce more drove taking the jack into the ditch, but the Double Bay pair were still holding shot. Weinberg’slast bowl dropped short leaving the score at 16-18 playing into the last end.

Cook held shot early which remained until Javen’s third bowl dislodged the shot bowl and became the shotThis was followed by a draw by Weinberg to be two up.Again Pearse showed hisoverall ability - this time- a brilliant backhand delivery to sit Javen’s bowl out, but leaving one in the head for the Double Bay team to have the shot.

Weinberg had the opportunity to draw a second shot and level the score, only to see his forehand delivery clip intothe shot bowl moving it slightly closer to the jack. However, when the head was examined Cook was sure that Weinberg’s second bowlwas not in the count, allowing Pearseto declare his last bowl with his team holding victory at 18-17

After the game Cook, said it was one of the best games he had been in all year.Javen had played extremely well all day and had it not been for the amazing weight control of Ray Pearse the result could have been vastly different.

THE Double Bay Bowling membership has until Friday to nominate for positions on the club’s two boards of management.

Nominations for all positions on the board of the (Registered) Bowling Club and the Men’s Bowling Club close on October 7 at 5 pm.

Early indications are that the Bowling Club’s leadership, headed by chairman, John Rosen, will be unchallenged, as will the makeup of the Men’s Bowling Clubmanagement under the presidency of Eddie Fingret, when members attend the 69thAnnual General Meeting (AGM) on the Sunday morning of October 30.

The Registered club is administered by a 10-person committee of a chairman, three deputy chairmen, treasurer and five directors, two of whom are the presidents of the Men’s Bowling Club and the Women’s Bowling Club.

The Men’s Bowling Club meeting, which convenes directly following the Registered Club’s AGM, has a president, three vice-presidents, a bowls secretary, general secretary, treasurer and a four-man committee.

Most interest in the elections appears to be for the Men’s Bowling Club’s Selection Committee, which is outside the jurisdiction of the club’s registered constitution.

In recent times, the committee has consisted of five members, one of whom is elected as its chairman at the first meeting.

Retiring chairman of selectors, Gerald Weinberg, has held the position for eight of the 10 years since the merger with Rose Bay Bowling Club in 2000.

The other chairmen of selectors were James Cook (2005) and Werner Kos (2006).

Two of the selectors are charged with naming teams for Grades 1 to 3 and two are responsible for Grades 4 to 7both with the collaboration of the committee chairman.

At the last count eight members had offered themselves to serve as selectors for the 2012 Pennant Season.
