Dear Parent,

Our records indicate you participated in what is referred to as an “AYP transfer” for your child due to the fact your child was attending a school in improvement. This means the school did not meet the standards established by the United States Department of Education (USDE) for 2 or more years. Under the federal school choice policy your student is able to stay at the school of choice until he or she has completed the highest grade in the campus and Amarillo ISD will provide transportation. However, you need to be aware that if your student’s campus of origin is no longer identified for school improvements, the district is no longer obligated to provide transportation for your student.

Currently, USDE is determining if this federal school choice policy and transportation requirements will continue under the same guidelines. This leaves two situations where Amarillo ISD transportation would be discontinued, one if the school of origin is no longer identified for school improvements or if the USDE federal accountability system is replaced or waived. Due to the uncertainty of the outcome and school starting, Amarillo ISD has decided to continue to honor the school choice guidelines with transportation until we receive notice from USDE as to the status of the federal accountability system. Busing will continue until USDE says the federal accountability system is waived and Texas will operate under a different proposed system or if your student’s school of origin is no longer identified for school improvements. In either event, your student may continue at their school of choice but busing will not be provided by Amarillo ISD. As the parent, you would be responsible for your student’s transportation.

We know this could have a large impact on your child and you so we wanted you to be aware of the possible situations once USDE makes a decision. Please complete the enclosed form and send back in the self-addressed envelope. If you have any questions, please feel free to call your student’s school and they will be happy to discuss this situation and answer any questions.

Sincerely,

Rod Schroder

Amarillo ISD, Superintendent

School Choice Transfer

Please complete and return in the self-addressed envelope.

I have received the information pertaining to “AYP transfer” in the 2013-2014 school year.

My child may continue to attend the school of choice.

Amarillo ISD transportation would be discontinued if the school of origin is no longer identified for school improvements or if the USDE federal accountability system is replaced or waived.

I understand transportation for “AYP transfer” will continue by Amarillo ISD until further notice.

I understand if the United States Department of Education waives the federal accountability system transportation by Amarillo ISD will be discontinued.

I understand that transportation will be the parent/guardian responsibility if the USDE waives the federal accountability system.

Please list any students who are on an “AYP transfer” with home campus and the campus they are attending on a transfer. If your child is no longer attending the school of choice please note on form below.
