Our Program Puts the Fun in Fundraiser
Please join us for our fundraising event! Bring friends and family as there is no cost to get into the meeting. We will be playing Quilto. Bingo for quilters. The cost is only $4.00 per card or 3 cards for $10.00.
You are welcome to bring your own beads or buttons to mark your cards (the cards are reusable, so no ink please).
Patty Jones has agreed to call for us again; she was a blast at last year’s retreat! There are many prizes and give aways. The “grand prize” will be $45 toward a 2009 workshop fee. (The 2009 schedule is printed further on in this newsletter and is on the website.)
This fundraiser is VERY important to our guild in many ways! We have 500 Quilto cards and would like to see every card being used and all of us laughing and having a great time while raising money. Remember, friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.

A Note from the President
Congratulations and thank you to all the newly elected officers of the Guild. They and any other members are welcome to come to the guild board meeting8 3 at 6 p.m. at the FairbornSeniorCenter.
Each of us has a significant responsibility to participate in helping the guild to function smoothly and to provide a friendly, supportive environment for quilters in the area, just as all of us are grateful that back in 1980 a group of quilters decided to make the effort to create this organization. Thank you—founders!

Open Sew Held at Local Quilt Shop

Exciting Workshops Lined Up for 2009
We have four workshops scheduled for 2009 – one in February, two in August and one in November.
I’m truly excited to have such awesome teachers pass on some of what they know!
I can’t tell you how fulfilling taking workshops within our guild has been to me. I not only learn a new skill or technique, but I get to spend time with and meet some really awesome people. You really get to know how talented and wonderful our guild is by attending these workshops.
I will have sign-up sheets available for Anita Shackelford this month and then, beginning in March, for the rest of the year. I will be accepting checks for Anita’s class in December. Like the other classes payment needs to be in by January. If due to weather Anita cancels, I will refund your money. Other than that there are no refunds unless approved.
If you should cancel, your spot will go to the next person on the waiting list (if there is one) and that person can write a check to you. If there is not someone on the waiting list I will not “call around” to find someone to replace you, but you are welcome to try. Please call me first to see if there are people waiting before you find a friend to replace you. I’m not trying to be insensitive, just as fair to everyone as possible.
I can’t wait to see who signs up and who I will be privileged to spend time with in 2009!

This workshop is very different from Annette’s. We will be working with photographs of people vs. landscapes and the technique is also different. We will mail our photo to her and she does something with it on her computer (no harm to the original) and we turn it into a quilt. See her (and students) gallery on her website. Quilters’ Rendezvous
Where has your quilting taken you lately or where will it take you in the future? Join us for an exciting and fun-filled weekend of quilting at the 2009 MVQG Winter Retreat at Bergamo/St. John Conference Center, 4400 Shakertown Road, Beavercreek. Our quilting journey begins on Friday, February 20th at 9 a.m. and continues until Sunday, the 22nd at 4 p.m.
Your initial booking of this fabulous rendezvous is a $50 deposit for lodgers and a $25 deposit for commuters, payable to Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild. Registration will continue at the October meeting or you may mail your registration form to Sandy Hartz, 3208 Lantz Rd., Beavercreek, OH45432.

The Sally Kerr fund is available to provide a “quilter in need” with a full or partial scholarship so they will be able to attend retreat. New Quilt Book Highlights
MiamiValley Album Quilts
Sue C. Cummings, a quilt historian, lecturer, and collector whose specialty is Ohio quilts and quiltmakers, is the author of a new book “Album Quilts of Ohio’s MiamiValley” published by the Ohio University Press.
The book documents album presentation quilts made by families and neighbors to commemorate life passages. More than 750 names appear on the quilts which date from 1888 to 1918 and come primarily from Darke, Miami, and Montgomery counties.
Cummings will share some of interesting stories she discovered in more than 35 years of documenting these quilts at a Meet the Author event from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, at Books & Company, in the Towne and CountryShopping Center, 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering.

Quilt Shows

Quilts by Deborah Melton Anderson, liturgical and art quilter, will be on display at SouthParkUnitedMethodistChurch, 120 Stonemill at Brown St., in Dayton (across from Frank Z used cars). She has commissioned work in churches across the country, but most especially in Columbus, and has had one women shows of her works, most recently at the Armory in Columbus. The church is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to Noon Sundays [the exhibit space is separate, but near, the sanctuary so whispers are in order on Sundays].

Greater Chicago Quilt Exposition III
Presented by Mancuso Show Management the exposition is held at Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center, Schaumburg, Ill. Hours are Thursday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is $12. DESCRIPTION: As the first state formed from the Northwest Territory, Ohio was the "Gateway to the West". Its population became a patchwork of people with varied customs and ethnic traditions. The 30 quilts comprising this exhibit reflect Ohio’s 19th century diverse populace through their mingling of quilting styles and influence.

Southern Pecan Pie
Ingredients
3 eggs
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn syrup
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 and 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 and 1/4 cups pecans
1 10-inch unbaked pie crust
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat eggs slightly to combine yolks and whites. Add corn syrup and sugars. Melt butter and add to the egg and sugar mixture. Stir in vanilla and pecans until well blended. Carefully pour into pie crust, being careful not to overfill. Bake for 50 minutes or until set. If the edges of the crust begin to brown too early, cover the edges with aluminum foil. Cool before serving.
Pointers & Tips for Quilting
Color: To put a spark in your quilt, use a bit of yellow or black.
Needleturn Appliqué: When doing needleturn appliqué, use a round wooden toothpick to turn the fabric. The roughness of the wood snags those little tiny, short, fibers and rolls that fabric right under. Then you can do the needlework.
Leftover Scraps: Have lots of scraps and they are over loading your sewing room? Collect them and call the local elementary school or Head Start or even the local child care center. They will take them off of your hands to make collages from. The children love the bright colors, odd shapes, and even better, the teachers love not having to use their precious resources to tear up paper for this project.
Stiletto: Use a stiletto to hold down your fabrics as they approach and go under the presser foot. You will find your seam allowances will be that perfect 1/4 inch from the start of the seam all the way through the end.
Storing bobbins and thread: Save large empty pill bottles to hold thread and bobbins for a take along appliqué project. Poke a hole through the cap so you can pull out the thread you need without your spool running away!
Removal of Paper: Try wetting the paper on the back of paper-pieced blocks to make it easier to remove. Spray the paper on the project until it is pretty wet. Let it dry for 20 or 30 minutes. Most of the paper will have dried enough to make it strong again, but the paper just around the seam lines was still be wet and weak. The paper will come out in record time, with a lot less fussing.
Marking Quilt: Use a pouncer to chalk a quilting design on your quilt, then spray lightly with spray starch to give it a little more staying power.
Changing Needle: When paper piecing, change the needle several times throughout the project. Paper dulls the needle.
Cutting Mat Storage: To keep your rotary cutting mats flat between uses, hang them on men's dress slack hangers, with the metal clips. The clips will hold the mat securely and in a flat, vertical position. Then, tie a pretty ribbon through the handle of your rotary cutter and slip it over the hanger. Everything is all together for your next project.
