ISS CORNER
This new section will present helpful tips for teachers from the ISS team.
  • Give assignments both in written and oral form.
  • Have practice exercises available for lessons
  • Have students underline key words or directions on activity sheets (then review the sheets with them).
  • Have complex homework assignments due in two or three days rather than on the next day.
--Jo-Ann,
Email us if you have used any of these tips and let us know how it went!

An Improved New Progress Report Shows Vanguard Leading in College Readiness
We received our new Progress Report, and the grade this year was a B, up from last year. We received strong feedback from students, parents and teachers on our school environment, an A, and our graduation rate improved.
We wish to thank everyone from last year's teams for all the support they gave to students to show improvement in their progress through high school.
A new area on the Progress Report shows that our school leads the way in students taking classes for college credit while still in high school, and passing those classes with a C or higher. Special thanks to Leylah for connecting our students with those and other important college opportunities.
We will go over the new report together, in detail, in a future professional development.

Design-Your-Own Professional Development: Election Day, November 8th
On November 8th, all Vanguard teachers are invited to "Design-Your-Own" professional development. We encourage teachers to take advantage of the many wonderful opportunities that are available throughout the city on that day.
The Math team is leaving as a group; some Upper School Humanities teachers are going to work at the Facing History offices and take advantage of the resources there; other teachers are going to workshops on "Mindfulness in Education," "Antisemitism and Jewish Life Under German Occupation," "The Age of Revolution," and "Sustainability and the City."
To support you in finding free and low-cost PD, we have created a website of resources in Art, Counseling, History, English Language Learners, Literacy, Science, and Math: click here for the site.
After you have chosen a PD, please respond using the following formto let us know what you are doing.
Although it may be tempting to do so, we ask that you not stay in and work the entire day. This is a day for teachers to be students! Thank you and have a wonderful time!
Tips for Following Up After Parent Teacher Conferences
⇒Follow up with families. If practical, contact parents (either by phone or in a note) who attended the conference and thank them for doing so. Ask if they have further questions or concerns and send home materials that can help them support learning at home. Contact parents who did not attend, as well, and offer alternative ways to communicate about their child.
⇒Communicate regularly. Communicate on an ongoing basis with families, with positive news as well as updates on student progress and challenges. Also let families know about other opportunities for them to be involved.
⇒Connect in-class activities.Create responsive instructional practices based on what you learned about family cultures, home learning environments, and student strengths and needs.
For more information on home and school connections, see the Harvard Family Research Project.

There will be opportunities for collaboration with teachers in all disciplines. Please visit the link above to see how their collection connects with your curriculum.
Other benefits of the partnership are:
  • free tours
  • chance to attend professional developlment workshops at the museum
  • conference room space for our own professional development use
