You are invited to participate fully in worship and to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the consecrated bread and wine. Everything you need is in this Bulletin, the Book of Common Prayer, the blue Hymnal 1982, and Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS). Children of all ages are always welcome at worship. Should you desire it, nursery care is available downstairs. Restrooms are located in the lounge, and also downstairs near the kitchen entrance. Many worshippers engage in quiet prayer before the service begins, so please be sensitive; and silence cell phones and pagers.

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known and from you no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria

Collect of the Day

O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

1st Lesson Jeremiah 4:11-12-12, 22-28 seated

At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem: A hot wind comes from me out of the bare heights in the desert toward my poor people, not to winnow or cleanse-- a wind too strong for that. Now it is I who speak in judgment against them.

"For my people are foolish, they do not know me; they are stupid children, they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but do not know how to do good."

I looked on the earth, and lo, it was waste and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and lo, they were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro. I looked, and lo, there was no one at all, and all the birds of the air had fled. I looked, and lo, the fruitful land was a desert, and all its cities were laid in ruins before the LORD, before his fierce anger.

For thus says the LORD: The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end. Because of this the earth shall mourn, and the heavens above grow black; for I have spoken, I have purposed; I have not relented nor will I turn back.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm 14

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." *
All are corrupt and commit abominable acts;
there is none who does any good.

The LORD looks down from heaven upon us all, *
to see if there is any who is wise,
if there is one who seeks after God.

Every one has proved faithless;
all alike have turned bad; *
there is none who does good; no, not one.

Have they no knowledge, all those evildoers *
who eat up my people like bread
and do not call upon the LORD?

See how they tremble with fear, *
because God is in the company of the righteous.

Their aim is to confound the plans of the afflicted, *
but the LORD is their refuge.

repeat 2nd half of chant tune

Oh, that Israel's deliverance would come out of Zion! *
when the LORD restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.

2ndLesson 1 Timothy 1:12-17

I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength for my work. I thank him for considering me worthy and appointing me to serve him, even though in the past I spoke evil of him and persecuted and insulted him. But God was merciful to me because I did not yet have faith and so did not know what I was doing. And our Lord poured out his abundant grace on me and gave me the faith and love which are ours in union with Christ Jesus.

This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I am the worst of them, but God was merciful to me in order that Christ Jesus might show his full patience in dealing with me, the worst of sinners, as an example for all those who would later believe in him and receive eternal life.

To the eternal King, immortal and invisible, the only God, to him be honor and glory forever and ever! Amen.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Luke 15:1-10

The Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Luke.

Glory to you Lord Christ.

One day when many tax collectors and other outcasts came to listen to Jesus, the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law started grumbling, “This man welcomes outcasts and even eats with them!”

So Jesus told them this parable:

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, what do you do? You leave the other ninety-nine sheep in the pasture and go looking for the one that got lost until you find it. When you find it, you are so happy that you put it on your shoulders and carry it back home. Then you call your friends and neighbors together and say to them, ‘I am so happy I found my lost sheep. Let us celebrate!’ In the same way, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine respectable people who do not need to repent.

“Or suppose a woman who has ten silver coins loses one of them, what does she do? She lights a lamp, sweeps her house, and looks carefully everywhere until she finds it. When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, and says to them, ‘I am so happy I found the coin I lost. Let us celebrate!’ In the same way, I tell you, the angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you Lord Christ.

Nicene Creed Prayer Book 358

Prayers of the People

Our God wraps us round in love and embraces us with mercy. There is noting we need hide. Let us bring our needs and the needs of the whole human family to God’s loving care, saying: Lord, hear our prayer.

That the leaders of the church will be, like Moses, one with their people and outspoken on their behalf, we pray to the Lord…

That the church will spend itself in search of the lost of this world, the homeless, the addicted, the uneducated, the ill, the rejected, and that we will welcome them to our household, we pray to the Lord…

That all who are far from home will live in safety, we pray to the Lord…

For all who are alienated from us and who stay away from this table, that they may return home, and that we may be watching to greet them, we pray to the Lord…

That peace and forgiveness will mark out lives together as families, we pray to the Lord…

Here other intercessions may be offered.

God of promises, you have brought us a long way and have kept us safe in our journey to you. Hear us now, and answer our prayers with delight. Teach us to run to you for all we need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, the Lord. Amen.

Presentation of the Offering Hymnal 380:3

Eucharistic Prayer

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every-where to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator ofheaven and earth....

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels andArchangels and with all the company of heaven, who for eversing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made usfor yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and becomesubject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our humannature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, theGod and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself,in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the wholeworld.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, ourLord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanksto you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for theremembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had giventhanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you:This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for youand for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drinkit, do this for the remembrance of me."

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, inthis sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people theBody and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of newand unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfullyreceive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saintsinto the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, andwith him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honorand glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our SaviorChrist has taught us,we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

Announcements

From Emery Washington, You are cordially invited to attend a presentation on our recent trip to Israel on September 19 at the Adult Forum. Mr. William Young of “Buford, Dickson, Harper and Sparrow” (and a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church) and I will present our views on the Israeli/Palestinian situation at that time through words and pictures.

Small Group Bible Study Starts in September - Interested in gathering to talk about scripture and how it applies to your life? Join us! We'll be meeting for desert, conversation, and informal study in one another's homes for a six week period starting he week of Sept. 12. Sign up in the lounge.

New Member Committee - Members of Hoy Communion provide more that a smile and a handshake to its visitors. Visitors are made to feel comfortable and accepted. The New Members Committee is one of the ways in which theses feelings are made possible. New members are hopefully helped into a meaningful and satisfying relationship with members of the church and Jesus Christ. The New Member Committee is in need of more participation in this effort. If you are willing to help with this committee, please contact Elizabeth Hines. The responsibilities for committee members are few however the joy from participating is great and long lasting.

October 16 rummage sale sponsored by the Parish Guild

Rummage and holiday items (Halloween, Christmas, Easter, July 4th) are needed for the October 16 Rummage Sale and Holiday Boutique sponsored by the Parish Guild.

Proceeds from the sale will pay for the installation of a newly acquired washer and dry purchased by the Guild.

Presently Altar Guild members launder at home the vestments worn by the clergy, the long linen cloths on the altar table as well as the vestments worn by the 28 acolytes and chalice bearers. Bags of table cloths and towels from the hospitality room are carried home and laundered by volunteers. Rummage sale proceeds will make the inconvenience of these home laundries a thing of the past when the washer and dryer are installed.

As you assemble your donations, remember that childrens’ clothes are a rummage sale “best seller.” The rummage sale committee has a lot of work ahead. Please place your rummage and Holiday items on tables along the walls of the undercroft as soon as possible.

Community Ministry Opportunities

The Trinity Episcopal Church Mealprogram is looking for volunteers to lend a hand at our monthly ministry of preparing and serving a hot meal to those less fortunate. Volunteer as an individual, family or best of all, with a group of friends (Holy Communion membership not required!). It is a great way to spend a couple of hours of community service and supporting a wonderful ministry at our sister Episcopal church. For more information, please contact Scott Ferguson at (314) 610-2730; or .

Hunger never takes a holiday. Support Trinity Food Pantry by dropping your Meal-a-Month contributions in the marked basket in the Narthex. Soups, powdered milk, boxed or canned meals, cereal, cookies, canned fruits and vegetables, and peanut butter in plastic jars are always welcome. Next ingathering is September 26.
