Position: Director of Development

The Opportunity:

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom, a post-secondaryCatholic liberal arts institutionin the final stages of pursuingdegree-granting status in Ontario,is seeking a Director of Development, full or part time, depending on qualifications. Embracingthe mission of OLSW, the successful candidate will play a key role in taking OLSW to the next level in its expansion as an academically excellent, affordable and faith-filledCatholic liberal arts college. The director will provide leadership in fundraising, marketing, communications, public relations, student recruitment and alumni outreach. The successful candidate may be able to work remotely most of the time.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Embrace the mission of OLSW and effectively communicate OLSW’s identity, vision and strategic plan
  • Be passionate about building relationships, and have a confident and positive attitude
  • Have a successful track record in fundraising, marketing, or sales;extensive experience in one or more of these areas preferred
  • Provide leadership and direction in all development activities
  • Focus on growing our donor base, general donations, and major gifts
  • Work closely with the President, Board of Directors, and our two development staff
  • Have strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills
  • Have strong presentation and written communication skills, including grant writing
  • Have a reputation of personal integrity and highest ethical standards

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
Name: / Employment status: / Full-time / Summary: As a key member of OLSW’s management, the Director of Development embraces the mission of OLSW, and effectively promotes and communicates OLSW’s identity, vision and strategic plan with excitement, passion and energy. The Director of Development provides direction to the Development Office and direction in all development-related matters at OLSW. The Director of Development is responsible for Administration of the Development Office, Fundraising, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, and Alumni Relations. The Director of Development will work closely with the Development Office staff, and the President.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Fundraising /
  • Direct the Development Office and its activities, working closely with Development Staff (currently 1 ½ people and occasional student help).
  • Devise and implement the Development Plan in line with the OLSW’s strategic plan as an institution, and in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.
  • Develop the Case for Support and review and modify annually as needed.
  • Strengthen and expand donor base.
  • Develop and grow donations in the annual fund as well as future capital campaigns.
  • Build and oversee a planned-giving program.
  • Grow the scholarship and bursary fund, as well as a major gifts program.
  • Direct grant research and proposal writing.
  • Meet and speak to current and prospective donors and supporters.
  • Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Ensure adherence to legislation (Privacy, Canada Revenue Agency, Imagine Canada Standards), industry codes of ethics, and best practices throughout the organization.

Marketing /
  • Provide direction in marketing to meet OLSW’s student recruitment and fundraising goals.

Communications and Public Relations /
  • Direct all OLSW’s external communications and public relations, including OLSW’s website.
  • Effectively communicate OLSWA’s identity, vision and strategic plan to the public.
  • Make public appearances/accept speaking engagements to share information about OLSW, and to connect with current and potential donors, and parents of prospective students.

Administration /
  • Work in collaboration with the President, Board Development Committee and Development Office.
  • Develop policies and procedures for the Development office which reflect ethical fundraising practices.
  • Manage the Development Budget.
  • Prepare quarterly reports for the Board of Directors on Development activities, and an Annual Report for the Board and for supporters of OLSW.
  • Oversee fundraising database and tracking systems, as well as donor and donation analysis.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • Embrace the mission of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom and be passionate to share its story and mission to others.
  • Be an effective communicator with strong interpersonal, verbal communication and writing skills
  • Have significant knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly in major gift fundraising. Be skilled in developing and implementing successful strategies for identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors with annual fund programs.

  • Be a comfortable public speaker (understands how to adapt his/her message to the audience at hand).
  • Be committed to ongoing professional development and maintain OLSW memberships with the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

About Our Lady Seat of Wisdom:

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom (OLSW)located in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, is a private institution for post-secondary education in the Catholic liberal arts tradition. Founded in 2000, OLSW currently offers one-, two-, and three-year certificates in Christian Humanities, and is in the final stages of pursuing degree-granting status with the Province of Ontario in order to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Humanities. Two defining characteristics of OLSW are its Catholic identity and its commitment to providing excellent, comprehensive liberal arts formation, with courses in Theology, Philosophy, Literature, History, Social Sciences, Languages, Fine Arts, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences.

OLSW has over one hundred full-time students, over 450 alumni, andfeatures an outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff, committed to OLSW’s mission.

OLSW has recently completed its application for degree-granting status in Ontario, and awaits confirmation from the Ministry.
