Questions from parishioners for the priest: This weeks question:Why do many people begin celebrating and listening to Christmas music before Christmas? Answer: We begin to hear Christmas carols on our radio, see the stores filled with Christmas items as a way to entice people to spend money. This is due to the commercialization of Christmas. The true meaning of Christmas is neglected and there is no reference to the spirituality of the specific holy days. This impacts society and often decreases the amount of time and energy people spend on their spritiualy well being and creates a materialistic value which causes people to forget the true meaning of Christmas. In our tradition, we strive to improve our spiritual life through fasting for the preparation of the any major feast. The feast is considered the beginning of the time of celebration.

23th Sunday after Pentecost

The Holy Priest-Martyr Josaphat, Archbishop of Polotsk (1623); Passing into Eternal Life (1950) of Blessed Hryhoriy (Gregory) Lakota, Auxiliary Bishop of Peremyshl and Confessor

Troparion (6): Angelic powers were upon Your tomb and the guards became like dead men; Mary stood before Your tomb seeking Your most pure body. You captured Hades without being overcome by it. You met the Virgin and granted life. O Lord risen from the dead, glory be to You! Troparion (4): You have become a brilliant light, O priest-martyr Josaphat. You gave up your life for your sheep like the Good Shepherd. You were slain by the lovers of heresy, and you have walked into the Holy of Holies to rest in the company of the angels. O long-suffering saint, we make this petition to you: Beg Christ, the Prince of Shepherds, to save our souls and to number us among the sheep on his right hand. Glory be ……Kontakion (4): You were enlightened by a spark from the crucified Christ from the time that you were a child. You were like an angel in monastic life, living in it with true holiness. You openly preached unity, and with your martyrs blood, you calmed the hearts of those who had been tossed about by schism. Christ has crowned you, and we sing to you: Rejoice, un-shatterable pillar of unity. Now ……Kontakion (6): With His life-giving hand, Christ our God, the Giver of life, raised all the dead from the murky abyss and bestowed resurrection upon humanity. He is for all, the Savior, the Resurrection and the Life, and the God of all.

Prokimenon (6): Save, Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. Verse: Unto You I will cry, O Lord, my God, lest You turn from me in silence. Prokimenon (7): Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His faithful. Verse: How can I repay the Lord for all the good He has done for me. Alleluia Verses: Verse (6): He who lives in the aid of the Most High, shall dwell under the protection of the God of heaven. Alleluia (3) Verse (6): He says to the Lord: You are my protector and my refuge, my God; in Whom I hope. Alleluia (3) Verse: Your priests shall be clothed with holiness; Your faithful shall ring out their joy. Alleluia.(3) The just shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. Alleluia (3)

Communion Verse: Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest. The just man shall be in everlasting remembrance. An evil report he will not fear. Alleluia(3)
