Our essential question this week was “What clues tell you what a character is like?” Our story this week is titled The New Friend. Our phonics focus this week is the sound of vowel digraph ou and ow like the sound in town. We have /ou/ and /ow/ words on our spelling list. This week our words to know are: buy, myself, school, city, party, seven, family, and please. Please practice these words with your child at home. This week we worked with understanding characters. We looked for clues in our story to let us know how a character feels. In grammar, we practiced contractions.

*Math

This week we finished working in Unit 8. We had some pretty tough concepts to work on this week. We worked on addition problems with known totals and unknown partners and money problems with unknown partners. I do not expect the kids to master the skills we practiced this week, but part of this unit is more of an introductory unit for concepts for next year. I did add a bonus page to our unit test to see how well we understood the concepts we learned. The bonus page did not count toward their test grade, but it was fun to see how much the kids did master. It was a challenging week in math. And they sure stepped up to the challenge!

*Religion

This week we worked in Chapter 19 in our books titled: The Mass. In this chapter we learned how each time we go to Mass it’s a special celebration celebrating God's love for us. We celebrate Mass with songs, prayers, gifts and a meal. We also talked about how the gifts we bring to Mass can be a promise to do good for God.

*Science

This week, we finished sharing our ocean projects. They've been doing a great job sharing and listening to each other. Everyone is so excited during that time of our day! We also learned about fish adaptations, for example, how their size and shape help them survive in the ocean. Some fish are flat and blend into the bottom of the ocean, while others are colorful and blend into the coral. Some are long and skinny shaped like a torpedo allowing them to zip through the water, while others are larger and slower moving. We also learned a little bit about sharks. We learned that sharks existed even before dinosaurs. We learned there are over 350 kinds of sharks. We also learned some sharks are very gentle and harmless. We will take a quiz to see if we know the difference between facts and myths of sharks. Finally, we made a 10-foot drawing of a great white shark. It’s hanging in our hallway.

*Other News and Announcements

Last week I sent home our last book order. I will be putting in the order on Wednesday, so if you would like to order books, please do so either online or by sending it in by Wednesday.

This week was our last week for homework and spelling tests.

I have had a few parents asking about timing for the Teddy Bear Picnic/Class play day on May 23rd. Let me explain a bit, we combine our performances of our class play with our first grade parent lunch to minimize time off for working parents. Therefore, all first grade classes perform their play at around 11:30 and then walk down to Beard’s Plaisance to sing the Teddy Bear Picnic song and enjoy a picnic lunch for with their parents. We then let the children play for a bit at the park. Therefore, please plan the timing to be from 11:20 to 2:00.

Please mark your calendars for some upcoming events . . .
