Vickery Creek Middle School

Rising 6th Grade Course Recommendation Verification

2017-2018

Our mission is the relentless pursuit of the highest

possible achievement for all.

Dear VCMS Parent:

Vickery Creek Middle teachers and administration have been preparing for the 2017-2018 school year. In doing so, we have taken great care to examine data and have in-depth discussions about how to best serve your child. The data examined includes GA Milestones scores, Lexiles, course grades, and your child's classroom work habits. Analysis of this data led to your child’s 2017-2018 course recommendations.

To view these course recommendations, first log into Campus (Parent) Portal as you would normally do to view grades. Next, if you have multiple children, use the “Switch Student” menu to select the name of the child whose recommended courses you would like to view. Finally, click on “Registration 17-18”, located just under your child’s name on the left side of the page. You should then be able to see the courses for which your child has been recommended. The window is open from May 18th-May 26th.

You should find a recommended course for each of the four core academic subjects - language arts, math, science, and social studies. The various levels of the courses are listed below.

On- Level / Gifted / Advanced / Resource / Co-Taught
Language Arts / 6110 / 6120 / 6130 / 6180 / 6190 or 6140
Math / 6210 / 6225or 6235 (Accelerated) / 6220 and 6230 / 6280 / 6290 or 6240
Science / 6310 / 6320 / 6330 / --- / 6390 or 6340
Social Studies / 6410 / 6420 / 6430 / --- / 6490 or 6440

Note: Advanced and gifted courses are taught together as advance/gifted classes. There are no gifted only classes.

Note: To be placed in a gifted section of an advance/gifted class, student must have already qualified per state criteria. Per state guidelines, a gifted student only needs to be served in 1 gifted course per school year.

A few students are scheduled into academic courses which provide intensive support instead of or in addition to Reading.

·  Literacy Reading (69172 or 69972)

  • Literacy Math (69171 or 69971)

The Lexile ranges have been realigned to match the Common Core Standards’ text complexity grade bands. This adjusted trajectory of reading comprehension means that all students should be reading at the college and career readiness level by no later than the end of high school.

Grade Band / “Stretch” Lexile Band
5 / 830-1010
6 / 925-1070
7 / 970-1120

Your child may join band, chorus, or Science Connections (STEAM). Go to the VCMS homepage. Look under “Latest News” for appropriate headline and link. Space is limited in these classes. Once full, a waiting list will be maintained. The links for these connection courses will no longer be accessible after May 26th .

Over the years, teacher and administration recommendations have proven to be extremely accurate. If you wish to request a course change, please complete and submit a “VCMS Course Change Request” form to the VCMS front office by Friday, May 26, 2017. Be sure to complete all sections of the form, including the data chart and reason for the request. The form can be opened by clicking on the link entitled “VCMS Course Change Request Form” (The link is located just below the link you clicked to open this document).

Thank you,

VCMS Administration
