This form has been designed to assist you with (a) scheduling rooms for data collection and (b) requesting participants from the subject pool. To better assist you with your study, we need to know exactly what department resources you will need to run your study. Please describe, as clearly as possible, how you would like to run your study/experiment, so that we have a better sense for (1) what size room you need to conduct your study, (2) how many sessions you would like to run, (3) how many participants you need, (4) what kind of equipment you need, (5) how long each session will be, and (6) any restrictions/qualifications regarding who can participate in your study.

Example 1: Our study requires 40 participants who will be randomly assigned to 2 different conditions. In the first condition, we will project an image to the participants and ask them to fill out a survey. The second condition will also see an image, but it is a different image. So, we are requesting a room that can hold at least 20 participants and the 5 members of our research

team and that has a projector or computer that we can use. The study should take 20 minutes to run, which includes the time it takes to obtain verbal consent (2 minutes), manipulate the variables (1 minute), fill out the surveys (15 minutes), and give the oral debriefing (2 minutes). Participants have to be male and must have normal or corrected vision.

Example 2: My study is going to be done in small groups. Participants are going to work in

teams to complete a puzzle and I am measuring how many teams successfully solve the puzzle. Teams will receive different kinds of instructions. I would like to run 3 different types of teams of

3 people each, but want to run each type of team 4 times, so I need 36 participants in total. I don’t need any special equipment, just some desks like a regular classroom would have. The study will take 30 minutes to run. This includes 2 minutes to get verbal consent, 4 minutes to give the instructions, 20 minutes to do the puzzle, and 4 minutes to provide an oral debriefing.

All participants must have normal or corrected vision.

What would you like for participants to see in the study description on Sona? Provide a description that briefly outlines what participants will be asked to do without revealing too much about your hypothesis or expected results.

Example 1: Participants will be asked to watch a video and fill out a questionnaire.

Example 2: Participants will be asked to provide a rating of pictures shown to them.

Please indicate all of the times that your group members can meet for data collection within the next two weeks. If we do not have space for your study, you will be asked to resubmit your form again with more availability, so it is best to submit a lot of options so that we can fill your request. We ask that you keep these times blocked off in your schedule until you hear back from the Psychology Research Area.

Please submit all of your materials (i.e., this form, consent form, debriefing, and ALL study materials) for review to your instructor for approval. If your instructor approves your study, he/she will inform the Research Area coordinator. Otherwise, he/she will email you and provide you further instruction. Please email your professor using the follow subject line format: instructor's last name-PSY321-semester-year-contact student's full name (e.g., Kantner-PSY321-Spring-2017-Jennifer Martinez or Drew-PSY321-Fall2020-Thomas Rojas).
