Organic Molecules Sidewalk Chalk Activity

For the following sidewalk chalk activity, you and your (partner/group) will be assigned one macromolecule from below. You will create a chalk drawing/collage that includes each component described below. As you sketch out your design, label it and add in the other required components of the drawing. In some cases, a labeled picture will be sufficient to communicate the required information in other examples you will have to use a written description with your drawing.

Carbohydrates (12pts)

  1. Draw an example of a carbohydrate molecule. Label the elements in a least one portion of your design (3 pts)
  2. Is the carbohydrate molecule an organic or inorganic molecule? EXPLAIN using words and/or the diagram. (2pts)
  3. What are the functions of carbohydrates? (3 pts)
  4. What are the monomers of carbohydrates? (1 pt)
  5. As part of your picture(s) demonstrate how monomers of glucose combine to form a polymer. What type of macromolecule did you create? (3 pts)

Proteins (12pts)

  1. Draw a protein molecule and label the elements in at least one portion of your design. (2pts)
  2. Is the protein molecule organic or inorganic? EXPLAIN using words or and the diagram. (2pts)
  3. Describe why proteins are important biological molecules. (1 pt)
  4. Label the monomers of proteins in your picture. (1 pt)
  5. In your picture label each of the following and label them 1 (smallest)4 Largest (5 pts)
  6. Amino acid
  7. Globular (tertiary) structure
  8. C, H, O, N
  9. Amino acid sequence.
  10. Describe the function of an enzyme somewhere on your design. (1 pt)

Lipids (12pts)

  1. Draw a lipid molecule and label the elements in at least one portion of your design. (2pts)

  6. What is the difference between the two saturated and unsaturated fats? Include a comparison in your drawing. (2 pts)
  7. Include in your drawing a picture of the cell membrane that is labeled with the phospholipids. Include and label the hydrophilic head and the hydrophobic tail. (2 pts)

Nucleic Acids (12 pts)

  1. Draw a nucleic acid molecule and label the elements in at least one portion of your design. (2pts)
  2. Are nucleic acids organic or inorganic? EXPLAIN using words and/or a diagram. (2pts)
