Organelle Function Project

Background: Now that you have a basic understanding of what the function of each organelle in a cell is, I want to see if you can identify similarities between what each organelle in a plant cell does to other items/objects/people/professions. You will be working in groups of 3-4 students to create a project that has a cohesive theme in which you compare each organelle in a plant cell to parts of a functioning unit or system. You will create a Google Slides presentation in which you identify similarities between what the organelle in a cell does to what the object/person/place/profession in your project does. Each group will present their project to the class. This project is due on: ______

Requirements:

1) Names! All group member names (first and last) must be included on the first slide.

2) A theme! - This is the first step you need to tackle before you start developing your project. This should be included on a slide in your presentation.NOTE: Each group within the class must have a DIFFERENT theme in the class! So let Mrs. Terranova know as soon as you pick a theme! THEME = ______

3) Pick your parts! You need to identify items, people, places, professions, etc. that correctly perform a similar FUNCTION to each of the organelles listed below (remember - you are relating what the organelle does, NOT how the organelle looks.) Using the table below, list the items, people, places, professions, etc. that will represent each organelle in your project. Additionally, identify WHO in your group will be responsible for finding the items or making the pages/slides for each organelle. Each member must complete 3 - 4 organelles; in other words, make sure the workload is shared as equally as possible!

ORGANELLE / ITEM THAT HAS THE SAME JOB WITHIN THE PROJECT THEME / WHO IN THE GROUP IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ORGANELLE
Cell Wall
Cell Membrane
Nucleus
Chromatin
Nucleolus
Lysosome
Golgi Bodies
E. R.
Vacuole
Mitochondria
Chloroplast
Ribosome

4) Label em’! Be sure to label each organelle in the project AT THE TOP OF THE SLIDE and be sure to spell it correctly.

Grading: The following rubric will be used to grade your project.

CATEGORY / POINTS WORTH / POINTS EARNED / NOTES/COMMENTS
ALL Group Member Names / 2
Cohesive Project Theme / 5
Labeled spelled correctly / Function related properly / Labeled spelled correctly / Function related properly
Cell Wall / 1 / 3
Cell Membrane / 1 / 3
Nucleus / 1 / 3
Chromatin / 1 / 3
Nucleolus / 1 / 3
Lysosome / 1 / 3
Golgi Bodies / 1 / 3
E.R. / 1 / 3
Vacuole / 1 / 3
Mitochondria / 1 / 3
Chloroplast / 1 / 3
Ribosome / 1 / 3
Neatness/Effort/Creativity / 10
TOTAL / 65

As you can see, THIS PROJECT IS WORTH 65 POINTS!!!

Be sure to work hard on it and take it very seriously. Since YOU get to pick your group, I cannot be held responsible for any group members that didn’t “pull their weight” or help on the project as much as you would have liked them to, so heed my warning now...

“CHOOSE YOUR GROUP MEMBERS WISELY!!!”

NOTE: Your test for this unit will be on how well you can relate the functions of organelles in a cell to how other parts of a system work. In other words, you need to know about how ALL of the organelles in your project are like the object/person/place/item you and your group related them to and be able to explain WHY each organelle is like that object/person/place/item. Good luck!
