Oral Health Coalition

Vision: We envision a population that will understand the importance of good oral health, know where to seek preventative care and treatment, and assume a level of personal responsibility for maintaining good oral health.

Mission: The Grand Traverse Region Oral Health Coalition will operate to coordinate outreach, education, screening, prevention, and treatment for all, with a special focus on low income and special populations.

The Grand Traverse Region Oral Health Coalition is launching its website in December. To ensure a successful launch and assist members and the public in gaining current, diverse, and relevant information please email Emily Llore () material that you would like to share. Some ideas may include: oral health programs offered, outreach information, special offers, data, agency successes or missteps, service gaps/needs. We can all learn a great deal from each other in an open and transparent way. Please have your material emailed by December 1stfor website launch.

LAUNCH PARTY

Come celebrate the launch of our website at the Launch Party on December 21st at 10 am at the Grand Traverse County Health Department! We will be discussing the new website and our past year together over holiday treats. Try to work it into your busy holiday schedules, we would love to get your thoughts while its fresh. MiDR is Active

Michigan’s Dental Registry, an oral health management application for dental & medical professionals is now available. MiDR is a web-based application that increases communication and transparency between medical and dental providers, allow for better coordination in patient treatment and referral across the medical and dental settings, positively impacting the quality of oral health care provided and early prevention among young patients.

Work Group Highlights and Membership:

As you read through highlights please consider joining a workgroup if you haven’t already done so. To join, simply email Emily which one you are interested in. Workgroup meetings will now be available in-person and through conference call, in an effort to encourage accessibility. Don’t worry about winter travel.

Increasing Access and Prevention:Promote evidence-based prevention strategies, increase oral health/ECC awareness, decrease preventable oral health ED visits. The Grand Traverse County Health Department and the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Departments have completed state training requirements for the WIC Fluoride Varnish Program and are now able to provide this preventative care to clients with the goal of securing families to a dental home.

Engagement and Advocacy:Enhance policy-makers’ knowledge and support for oral health and capture funding mechanisms.Website launchin December to gain visibility, transparency and promotion. Remember to share your agency’s information. Multiple Brighter Future grants submitted to assist in local efforts.

Data and Technology: Identify, collect and interpret oral health indicators using measurable, uniform and comparable technology and Data:We have provided ICD-10 codes to assist in receiving ED visit data from Munson Healthcare, including Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. HDNW and NMHSI are collaborating to collect and share comparable data.

Health Integration: Achieve full integration of oral health with physical health by cultivating interprofessional relationships.Presentations to strengthen interprofessional relationships include: Regional Perinatal Group, Northern Michigan Pediatrics Coalition Annual Meeting, Health Integration and Early Education with Dr. Cox and Altarum Institute, 9 months in 1 Day: A Team Approach, Resort District Dental Assistant Society and NMC Dental Assistant Advisory Board.

Good Luck Brighter Futures Grant Applicants!

Northwest Michigan Health Services Inc:Spread A Smile. Targeted towards diabetic patients, pregnant women and infants which would provide oral health supplies (electric toothbrush!) and education.

Grand Traverse County Health Department: Oral Health Integration, Literacy and Access. Oral health supplies and education provided at all GTCHD sites (GTCHD Lafranier, K-Town Youth Care, Youth Health and Wellness Center) with a focus on establishing a dental home.

Health Department of Northwest Michigan: Age One Appointment Lunch and Learn. In-house training and information opportunities to private practices provided through the fun and interactive Lunch and Learn format.
