Simulators fly RAAF to cutting edge

Three cutting edge flight simulators have taken RAAF Base Richmond to the very forefront of simulator facilities in the world.

The RAAF hosted the Official Air Lift Group Simulator Acceptance Ceremony before Christmas, 13 years to the day that the decision was made to acquire such a capability.

The B707, C130J and C130H Level 5 full flight simulators are universally recognised as the first highest fidelity military simulators of their type in service in the world today.

The simulators have full motion, sound, 240 degree by 40 degree field of view vision systems, vibration, weather and other environmental cueing in all light levels.

They are considered the closest one can get to experiencing a real life flight.

General manager of CAE Military Simulation and Training Alan Johnson said at the November 27 ceremony that “each (simulator) has set a benchmark for flight fidelity that has yet to be exceeded.”

The RAAF Air Lift Group Training Centre has significantly transformed the way the Air Force trains with B707/C130 aircrews and many maintenance personnel.

Use of the simulators to conduct training saves both money and time, reducing the number of hours dedicated to training in the real aircraft This frees up aircraft for use in other operations such as Iraq or Bali and for greater defence support.

The simulators were designed and manufactured by CAE Electronics Australia at Silverwater and are operated at the RAAF base by 285 Squadron, a sub-unit of No 85 Wing.

Since accreditation, the simulators and 285SQN staff have supported the training of all the B707 and C180 crews of No 33, 36 and 37 Squadrons also based at Richmond.
