Opening up your web

Make sure you have logged on to the server and have Internet access.

  • Start
  • Programs
  • Microsoft FrontPage

The program opens and you will see this screen.

  • Click File
  • Click Open Web

  • Type the following in the folder name

box:

(this is where you will type the name of your web)

  • Click Open button
  • The Enter Network Password window will appear
  • Type in your Montgomery User name and Password

(You may recognize it better as your e-mail User name and Password.)

  • Click OK

  • You will now see this screen
  • Notice that you will see the URL of your site in the folder name
  • Click the Open button

  • Double click on the Default.htm file

What you see now is the home page of your web. This page has frames. The frame on the left is the contents frame. The frame on the right is your home page. This page along with the contents frame will be what people see when they log on to your web site.

You will create hyperlinks on the left frame (contents) to change what people see on the right.

Notice that you now see five Switch Tabs instead of three, No Frames and Frames Page HTML have been added.

Changing the Color on a Page

  • Right click in the contents frame
  • Click on Page properties
  • Click on the Background tab
  • Click on the drop arrow beside the background color
  • Choose a color from the standard colors, more colors, or custom colors
  • Change your text color, if necessary
  • You may want to change the Hyperlink, Visited hyperlink, and Active hyperlink colors to coordinate with the color you have chosen for your background
  • Click OK

While you see the changes you made to the frame, the changes have not been saved.

  • Click the Save icon or go to File and Save
  • Click on the Preview switch tab to see what the page will look like in the browser
  • Click on the Normal switch tab to continue working on your home page
  • Click in the right frame, your home page

Adding a Title to your Home page

  • On the formatting toolbar click bold
  • Click the drop arrow beside font size and choose 24 pt
  • Click the drop arrow beside font and choose Arial
  • Click center
  • Click to change the Font color
  • Type a Title for your homepage
  • Press Enter key two times

Inserting a Clip Art

  • Click Insert
  • Click Picture
  • Click Clip Art
  • The Clip Art Gallery window appears
  • Click on a category
  • Click on your picture, a gray pop-up will appear
  • Click on the Insert Clip icon
  • The clip art now appears on your homepage

  • Click once on the clip art
  • Use the handles to resize the picture

Changing the background

  • Right click on the home frame
  • Click on Page properties
  • Click on the Background tab
  • Click to put a checkmark in the box beside background picture
  • Click the Browse button
  • Select Background Picture window opens
  • Click Clip Art button in lower right corner
  • Clip Art Gallery window opens
  • Click on Backgrounds category
  • Click on a background, a gray pop-up will appear
  • Click on the Insert Clip icon
  • The file name now appears in the Page Properties window
  • Click OK
  • Your background is now on your home page

Making Your Clip Art Transparent

Pictures Toolbar

  • Click once on your clip art
  • The picture toolbar should appear at the bottom of the window
  • Click once on the Set Transparent Color icon
  • A window informing you that to make the picture transparent it will be changed to the gif format
  • Click OK
The pointer now looks like a pencil with an arrow coming out of the eraser.
  • Click in a white area with the pointer
  • You now see your back ground where there was white before.
  • Click Save
  • Save Embedded Files window appears
  • The Clip Art and Background files are highlighted
  • These are images and you want to save your images in the images folder
  • Click Change Folder button
  • The Change Folder window appears
  • Click once on the images folder
  • Click OK
  • The Save Embedded Files button appears again and now the files are going to be saved in the images folder
  • Click OK
  • Your page will be saved. Be patient it may take a little while for the process to be completed.
  • Preview your page

Adding a New Page

  • Click File
  • Click New
  • Click Page
  • The New window will open giving you numerous choices.
  • Click Normal Page
  • Click Save
  • The Save As window appears
  • The file name is highlighted. We are going to type:

classrules

Do not put a space in the file name and no capitals

  • Click the Change button to change the Page Title
  • The Set Page Title window appears
  • Type:

Class Rules

This time we will use capitals and spaces, if necessary. This title will appear in the title bar of the browser.

  • Click OK
  • Click the Save button
  • This page now appears in the folder list

Creating a Hyperlink to a Page in Your Site

  • Double click on the default page
  • Highlight the word Home
  • Click the hyperlink icon
  • The Create Hyperlink window appears
  • Click on the Home.htm file The file appears in the URL box
  • Click OK

Creating a Hyperlink to Site

  • Highlight the word District
  • Click the hyperlink icon
  • The Create Hyperlink window appears
  • Type the URL for the district web site in the URL box
  • To have the site open in the whole window click the box with three dots beside Target Frame
  • Chose Whole Window
  • Click OK in Target Frame window
  • Click OK in Create Hyperlink window

Adding a Table

Tables help you easily arrange pictures and text on a page.

  • Insert a new page – Select the normal page
  • Save the page
  • Use the file name:photos
  • Use the page title:Photos
  • Add a Title to your page
  • Click Table
  • Click Insert
  • Click Table
  • Change rows to 3
  • Change Columns to 3
  • Change Alignment to Center ( this will center the table on the page
  • Change Border size, Cell padding, and Cell spacing to 0 (borders will not show in the browser
  • Make sure Specify width has a check mark and it is 100 in percent
  • Click OK

Inserting a Picture

  • Click Insert
  • Click Picture
  • Click the Select File icon
  • Choose where your picture is located
  • Click on the picture to select it
  • Resize
  • Click the Resample icon in the picture toolbar
  • This changes the pixel size to match the current size. The file size is reduced and the picture will take less time to download.

Inserting Thumbnail Pictures from a File into a Table

  • Click in one of the cell
  • Click Insert
  • Click Picture
  • Click from File
  • The picture window appears
  • Click the file folder and magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner
  • The Select File window appears
  • Click the drop arrow beside the Look in window
  • Click the 3 ½ Floppy (A) [or wherever your pictures are stored
  • Click once on the file you want to select it
  • Click OK
  • Your picture appears and may be very large
  • Click once on the picture
  • The picture toolbar will appear
  • Click once on the Auto Thumbnail icon
  • The picture is now thumbnail size and after saving the page you can click on the picture to see it enlarged. The advantage is that it does not take as long for the thumbnail pictures to load and you can put several on one page
  • Change the size of the thumbnails:
  • Click once on the thumbnail
  • Click Tools
  • Click Page Options
  • Auto Thumbnail tab
  • You can change the width and height of the thumbnail on this page. The height and width are in pixels. Remember the larger the picture the longer it will take to load. You can also make the border around the picture larger or smaller.
  • Click OK when you have made your changes
  • Click Save
  • Make sure your pictures are saved in the images folder. There will be two pictures for each picture you add, one thumbnail and one large picture.
