Purpose and Aim of Volunteer Involvement:

In order to provide an outstanding camping experience for youth, the Opemikon Camp Committee is forming a Communications-Marketing Team for the 2016-17 Scouting year.

This team of volunteers will work closely with the Opemikon Camp Committee Chair, Council Properties Chair and Opemikon Camp Director. Members may work as project lead or as part of a larger team to complete specific communications and marketing related projects to support events for facility operations and program delivery. Accountability is to the Opemikon Camp Committee with direct report to the Chair of the Camp Committee. Support personnel are to be recruited from the membership within Voyageur Council, Opemikon Scouting Group (OPE Crew) and the Opemikon Camp Committee. Project lead for communications and marketing needs for each event, is expectedto report to Camp Committee at meetings immediately prior to and following the date of the event.

Specific projects for 2016-17 include but are not limited to:

  • Marketing Development
  • Development of marketing materials to support major events as per annual camp calendar; including but not limited to Work Weekends, Skills Training Weekends, March Break Camp, Summer Camp, Theme Focused Weekend Camps, Fundraising events and Alumni events.
  • WebSite Oversight
  • Working with Ottawa Scouting Service Centre staff, coordinate uploading of Camp Opemikon materials to website. Note new website currently under development using WordPress.
  • Assist in development of materials for website to ensure information flow for user groups, support of ongoing program and training events, and notifications for fundraising efforts.
  • Social Media Oversight
  • Oversee all aspects of social media programs promoting Camp Opemikon.
  • Providing guidance and advice to activity organizers with the aim of promoting Camp Opemikon.

Responsibilities:

Build and Maintain Strong Working Relationships:

  • Build a strong communications team for Camp Opemikon.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with the Camp Committee Chair, committee members, onsite Camp Director, Council Properties Chair, and other key individuals tosupport marketing of camp activities;
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders;
  • Interfacing,as requested by Committee Chair or Camp Director, with neighbours and community groups for products, services, special projects and in support of potential opportunities.

Program Excellence:

  • Supporting the continued growth and development of onsite program through:
  • Generation of materials to support heightened awareness of current programs and
  • Development of new program opportunities.

Safety Leadership

  • Supporting the Camp Director in ensuring the ongoing maintenance of a Safe and Healthy Camp Environment,as requested, by:
  • Communicating policy, procedure and decisions regarding the use of camp property as it relates to safety best practices and requirements.
  • Ensuring compliance with all regulatory bodies in conducting marketing and communication efforts.

Strategic and Operational Planning:

  • Contribute to the development and execution of a Camp Business Plan which addresses marketing and communication requirements.
  • Assist Camp Committee Chair and Camp Director in building a Camp Committee Team to support the ongoing needs of the weekend program operations; facility usage; strategic planning and long-term sustainability of the property.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Work with Camp CommitteeChair in development of budget for specific event.
  • Accountable for all expenditures for tools being created.
  • Provide financial statement at conclusion of event/project.
  • Additional duties and special activity commitments may be required from time to time.

Support Provided: Orientation to position and organization through Scouts Canada courses and direct support by Camp Committee Chair, Camp Director and members of the Opemikon Camp Committee.

Qualifications:

  • Willing to subscribe to the mission and principles of Scouts Canada and be a fully registered member of Scouts Canada
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience as a facilitator and/or manager of volunteers as asset
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a team environment
  • Experience in marketing/communications field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Access to a computer and proficient in Social media forums, Microsoft applications, WordPress
  • Prior involvement with Scouts Canada or other like not-for-profit organization

Time Commitment:Hours are dependent on the specific project and its scope.

Average hours should be 10-30 hours per project.

Term:Appointed, as per project requirements in fulfillment of Opemikon’s business plan, by the Opemikon Camp Committee Chair in consultation with Camp Director and Council Properties Chair.
