Purpose and Aim of Volunteer Involvement:

Scouts Canada, Voyageur Council –Camp Opemikon is seeking a Volunteer to fulfill the role of Camp Committee Vice Chair to support the delivery and expansion of program for youth ages 5-26 years, at our camp facilities located on Christie Lake, Maberly, Ontario.

The Volunteer will work closely with the Field Operations Team to further develop and deliver quality program that is accessible and suitable while the youth are at camp.

The Volunteer will assist the camp committee in the development and implementation of camp marketing, program, administration, facility maintenance and facility development for Scouting and non-Scouting user groups.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the Opemikon Camp Committee, the Vice Chair shall stand in for the Committee Chair as requested and shall assist in:

Build and Maintain Strong Working Relationships:

  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with the committee members, onsite Camp Director, Council Properties Chair, Operations Manager and other key individuals to further the development of Camp Opemikon;
  • Communicating policy, procedures and decisions regarding the use of camp property, sound organizational and fiscal management activities per Scouts Canada’s Policies & Procedures;
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal/external partners and stakeholders;
  • Interfacing,as requested by Committee Chair or Camp Director, with neighbours and community groups for products, services, special projects and potential donors

Program Excellence:

  • Supporting the continued growth and development of onsite program through:
  • SCENES: Scout Centres for Excellence in Nature and the Environment
  • Identify, promote and monitor strong environmental practices
  • Ongoing onsite program in support of the Canadian Path
  • Special Events
  • Exploring new opportunities for specialty programs and activities within Scouts Canada’s Bylaw, Policies and Procedures framework.

Safety Leadership

  • Supporting the Camp Director in ensuring the ongoing maintenance of a Safe and Healthy Camp Environment,as requested, by:
  • Ensuring the Camp Committee is complying with all legislative requirements
  • Supporting timely monthly and annual inspections per Scouts Canada’s Property Standards. This may include, but is not limited to assisting in the coordination of timely compliance inspections with external agencies and regulatory bodies. (Public Health; Fire Safety Authority; Ministry of the Environment)
  • Support the annual completion/submission of Property Safety Scorecard on/before August 31st.
  • Identify, recommend and monitor best practices for health and safety of all camp user groups
  • Work collaboratively with Camp Director and other key parties to ensure that any instances of non-compliance are addressed and rectified immediately.
  • Conduct annual or semi-annual project days to maintain and/or improve the camp property and its facilities and activity centers
  • Communicate policy, procedure and decisions regarding the use of camp property as it relates to safety best practices and requirements.

Strategic and Operational Planning:

  • Contributing to the development and execution of a Camp Business Plan which addresses short-term and long-term planning with regard to both Capital and Operational needs.
  • Serving in a leadership role with the Camp Committee team in making recommendations to the Council Properties Chair around the implementation of the items within the Camp Business Plan.
  • Assisting Committee Chair and Camp Director in building a Camp Committee Team to support the ongoing needs of the daily operations; facility maintenance; strategic planning and long-term sustainability of the property.
  • Assisting Committee Chair in recruitment, orientation, supervision and recognition of Committee members.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Working as member of the Committee to project annual Program/Operation and capital budget(s) as required
  • Additional duties and special activity commitments may be required from time to time

Support Provided: Orientation to position and organization through Scouts Canada courses and direct support by Committee Chair, Camp Director and Council Properties Chair is provided.

Qualifications:

  • Willing to subscribe to the mission and principles of Scouts Canada and be a fully registered member of Scouts Canada
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience as a facilitator and/or manager of volunteers as asset
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Access to a computer and proficient in Microsoft applications and email
  • Prior involvement with Scouts Canada or other like not-for-profit organization
  • Certified in First Aid or willingness to obtain certification*
  • Hold or be willing to obtain all the necessary certifications relative to the management of the property*

Time Commitment:Hours are dependent on the camp committee’s initiatives and projects at each camp in order to ensure implementation of camp programming and facility maintenance is completed in a timely manner. Average hours should be 10-15 hours per month.

Term:Appointed annually by the Opemikon Camp Committee Chair in consultation with Camp Director and Council Properties Chair.

Risk:The degree of risk is considered to be low but is to be accessed periodically for this volunteer position. The inherent risks lie in the degree of isolation, access to property, degree of physical demands and the degree of inherent risk. Every attempt has been made to minimize the risk process but periodic risk assessment is required.
