The Applicant must be a representative of the Canadian sponsor. The applicant must describe and DOCUMENT in this application those characteristics of the variety which demonstrate merit for use in Ontario. No supporting data collected from Syn-1 generations should be used in this application. Information must be supplied for each section excepting those listed as optional. No decision will be made until the application is complete and sufficiently documented.

I. AGRONOMIC PERFORMANCE.

Submit evidence of agronomic performance based on total herbage yield (kg/ha). All Ontario tests must be included. Forage yield data collected in the seeding year will not be considered. A minimum of six (6) station-years yield data is required. For all species other than red clover, there must be data from three (3) trials that are in their second or older production year (i.e. second or later year after the seeding year).

Trials must have a minimum of three replications and the mean CV for total herbage yield must be less than 14%. Locations may be within Ontario, or in other regions of North America outside of Ontario accepted by the Ontario Forage Crops Committee. (See OFCC Variety Testing Procedures for details.) For alfalfa and timothy, two reference varieties are required. Only one is required for all other forage species.

Please use the accompanying Excel spreadsheet to summarize the yield performance of the candidate and the reference varieties.

NOTES:

Note 1: For tests other than OFCC tests, the complete test summaries which includes all entry names, entry by harvest mean yields, the CV for each harvest, and the LSD for each harvest, and the mean, CV, and LSD for the total yield, must be included with the application.

Note 2: The same pair of reference varieties must be used for all out of province tests.

Note 3: For tests conducted outside of Ontario, documentation must be provided which confirms that the seed generation of the variety tested was Syn-2 or lower level pedigree and that Pedigreed seed was used for reference varieties.

II. PEST RESISTANCE (alfalfa only).

Resistance rating. Resistance levels should be characterized using % resistance plants as follows: S=<6%, LR=6-14%, MR=15-30%, R=31-50%, and HR=>50%. If data are not available, a resistance rating of Susceptible (S) will be assumed.

Furnish comparative data on these diseases for your variety. Tests must be conducted following standard procedures and scoring systems as described in the North American Alfalfa Improvement Conference (NAAIC) Standard Tests to Characterize Alfalfa Cultivars, 3rd edition, as amended, 1995. Each test must include designated resistant and susceptible checks. Tests using unadjusted data showing a resistant or susceptible check falling outside of acceptable ranges will not be accepted. Statistics must include the test mean (mean of all entries in test), LSD (0.05), and CV (%) for unadjusted % resistance and ASI data that are reported. All data is to be adjusted based on the resistant check. Resistance levels should be characterized using % resistance plants as follows: S=<6%, LR=6-14%, MR=15-30%, R=31-50%, and HR=>50%. Do not refer to tolerance. Checks must be characterized based on long term % resistance averages published in the NAAIC Standard Tests to Characterize Alfalfa Cultivars, 3rd edition, as amended, 1995. Use the following formula:

Adjusted % R of variety = (Adjusted % R of Checks) / (Unadjusted % R of Checks) x Unadjusted % R of Variety

Note: If a pest reaction of the variety falls on or just above an adjusted resistance category level (+2% for LR, MR, and R; +3% for HR) and the higher rating is claimed, results of a second test must be reported. If the two tests do not agree, the lower rating is appropriate unless further testing supports the higher rating.

III. OTHER CHARACTERISTICS.

For varieties that have been bred for a special purpose (eg. grazing tolerance) and for which the Canadian Sponsor requests that the OFCC consider this special attribute(s), data demonstrating merit for this characteristic must be provided. For reed canarygrass, data must be provided to indicate level of: 1) tryptomine and carboline alkaloids; and 2) gramine alkaloids, relative to Palaton or Venture.

For all additional characters, provide a summary of performance relative to reference varieties, the test locations, experimental methods and experimental design, and the statistical methods used.

*Reference varieties other than the designated OFCC reference varieties are acceptable for yield tests conducted outside of Ontario provided that they are varieties that have been supported for registration by the OFCC, have been registered for sale in the Ontario region within the past 10 years, and have been tested in OFCC variety tests.
