Available to Bloomington staff, Bloomington retired teachers, subs, non-public staff and Bloomington residents with a teaching license.

PD - Common Formative Assessment – Part 1 = 1.5 clock hours (All)

This online workshop will provide an overview of how to begin working on common formative assessments by "unwrapping" essential standards to identify what students have to accomplish in a course.

PD – Common Formative Assessment – Part 2 = 2 clock hours (All)

This online class will show teachers how to develop assessments that connect to the objectives of the course they teach. This class will also demonstrate how teachers can use goal sheets with their students to help them identify how to better master the course objectives.

PD – Math Algorithms = 1 clock hour (All)

This workshop will describe a variety of algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These algorithms are used in the Everyday Math curriculum, which Bloomington uses in grades K - 5. Elementary teachers may find this course useful if, for example, they are switching grade levels and would like to review the algorithm for their new grade. Secondary teachers (particularly math, science and special education) will find the course useful in providing background on the algorithms that students learn in elementary school. PD – Motivating & Engaging Adolescent Learners** = 1 clock hour

(All **varied student requirement)

This workshop will introduce the participant to a framework of motivation and strategies teachers can use to engage and interest adolescent learners.

PD – SIOP** Overview Training = 1.5 clock hours (All **varied student requirement)

This online workshop will provide an overview of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and how it can improve the academic achievements of English Language Learners and at-risk learners.

PD – SIOP** Lesson Preparation = 2 clock hours (All **varied student requirement)

This online workshop will provide information about the Lesson Planning Component of SIOP and how to write content and language objectives for a class or subject.

PD - SIOP** Building Background = 2 clock hours (All **varied student requirement)

This on-line workshop will provide information about the Building Background Component of SIOP and to give staff the opportunity to practice techniques for building background with students.

PD – Introduction to Somali Culture** = 2 clock hours (All **varied student requirement)

Introduction to Somali Culture is a presentation by Abdisalam Adam, a staff member in the ELL Department in the St. Paul Public Schools. His presentation on Somali Culture focuses on Somalis in Minnesota, Islam and its role in Somali society, gender and family and Somali educational beliefs and attitudes. PD – DRA*** = 2 clock hours (K-5 ***reading requirement)

The Developmental Reading Assessment is a required test in grades K-5 to assess students’ strengths and instructional needs in reading. This formative assessment will help guide your instruction to meet the needs of all students.

PD - Making Meaning*** = 2 clock hours (K-5 ***reading requirement)

Making Meaning is the key component for comprehension instruction during the balanced literacy block. This course will introduce a two-day Making Meaning Lesson using a trade book. Participants will learn comprehension, questioning and vocabulary strategies for reading K-5. Participants will be able to create their own comprehension focused lesson using any trade book. PD - Making Words*** = 1 clock hour (Grades 1 & 2 ***reading requirement)

Working with words is one component in our balanced literacy approach. Use this course to learn how to use the Making Words program for first and second grade. Participants will be able to teach a Making Words lesson after completing this course. Participants will be able to use sorting for phonics instruction. Participants will be able to make the connection between the Making Words curriculum and phonics instruction. Register here and click on link to complete the course.

PD – Mental Health**** = 1 clock hour (All ****mental health requirement)

You will have a basic understanding of possible Mental Health Disorders in the school and you’ll have a basic set of responses that you might be able to use, when you identify a concern in your classroom.

Bloomington staff:

1) Register for the online course on the staff development tracking system.

Login with email name and TIES password.

2) Click on 2014-15 Online Courses to select the online course.

3) Register for the 6/30/15 course and then complete online course anytime before June 30.

4) When complete, email course reflection to instructor of online course.Credit will be posted in the tracking system after instructor approval.

All others:

1) Call or email Sue Ostlund to register (contact information below).

2) Complete course anytime before 6/30/15 and email course reflection to instructor of online course.

3) After instructor approval, clock hour credit will be posted to your account in the staff development tracking system.
