ONLINE PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS
1.Go to https://quest.cns.utexas.edu/student and follow the directions to get an EID number. If you have problems, do NOT create a 2nd EID - see me instead. The EID is different from your ID number. You must put in your ID number also. See step 3, below.
2.Click the “register as a student” link & follow ALL the directions. Class number is 98765 for IB Biology. Put in your name. Then, input “none” in the 4th box (“classwork keypad”). Register soon. I will “lock” the enrollment on the 4th Monday of school.
3.VERY IMPORTANT!!! Login at https://quest.cns.utexas.edu/student (no “www”, include the backslash “/”). Click on the your class number (98765 for IB Bio) Use button 5.3 “manage info (name, phone number, etc.)" to check your information. The system defaults your student ID to 1234567890 so YOU have to fix it. RE-SET YOUR ID NUMBER TO YOUR GOHS ID NUMBER, STARTING WITH LEADING ZEROS IF THEY ARE PRESENT IN YOUR ID NUMBER. For example, if your GOHS number is 112233 then put in 0000112233. Be accurate!!! IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS CORRECTLY, THEN YOU WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR YOUR HOMEWORK. Remember: You have 2 numbers: an EID to log onto the online HW, and your GOHS ID so I can import your scores to give you credit for your HW.
4.Download “Students' Instructions.” Read them carefully for information not already covered here.
5.Starting the 2nd week of school, download and print your first assignment. Then log off.
6.Do at least one question from your printed copy. Login again & submit its answer before our next class period (to test the system). This gives you a chance to contact me if there are problems. Random guessing on multiple-choice questions may cause a negative score!
7.Continue submitting answers until the due time. (Use correct significant figures on multiple choice questions; do not round answers for free response questions. Scientific notation is put in as follows: 5.6 x 10-5 is entered as +5.6e-5, where “e” means “times 10 to the . . .” 6.022 x 1023 becomes +6.022e23).
8.Download the solutions after due time so you can learn how to do any problems you didn’t answer correctly (don’t forget to do this!).
Work-arounds for computer/internet breakdowns
•Print the assignments a week ahead so you are always prepared.
•Use the computers in the media center, computer room, or other classrooms before/after school or at lunch to copy out or print out the assignments.

Reading the files (for UTexas PDF files and for any other files you download)

•Files ending in .pdf (e.g., UTexas online HW) - Download the latest Adobe Reader at:
•Files ending in .doc, .xls or .ppt (other files on my website)- you may need Microsoft Word Viewer, Excel Viewer or PowerPoint Viewer, respectively, if you don’t have Microsoft Office. You can find these at
• if your PC is old & does not automatically expand compressed downloads (use WinZip 8.1 SR-1, its free)
