“One Stop Shop for Everything Social Studies”

ü  Pacing Guides, Year-at-a-Glance documents and Timelines: Grades K-5

ü  Lessons: Ready-to-use, complete lessons for grades K-5 with student resources such as graphic organizers, primary/secondary sources, readings, etc. that are aligned to NGSSS Social Studies grade level standards and Florida Language Arts Standards.

Civics in a Snap (Grades K-5) 15-20 minute lessons that build civic knowledge and dispositions

Civics Integration (Grades 3-5) challenging lessons with assessments and strong literacy connections

Financial Literacy (Grades K-5) Financial Literacy Units with 15 lessons per grade, a framework to guide instruction and highly motivating lessons that students enjoy.

o  History Labs (Grades K-5) Students “discover” history through analysis of primary and secondary sources

o  Local History (Grades 4-5) Miami-Dade County’s history, cultures and communities come alive through the analysis of primary and secondary sources

ü  Instructional Resources: Throughout the year, resources for classroom instruction are published and disseminated via Weekly Briefings to commemorate important events related to social studies. A few examples of these dates and events include American Founders’ Month, Patriot Day, Hispanic Heritage, African American History, Native American History Month, etc. See the “Weekly Briefings” tab on the department’s website throughout the academic year for current information.

ü  Elementary Competitions: See both the “Competitions” and “Weekly Briefings” tabs on the department’s website for information regarding these annual competitions:

o  Geography Bee: Grades K-5 – Student teams compete in this event to determine the extent of their geographic knowledge.

o  History Bee: Student teams in grades 5 and 6-8 compete with each other to determine the extent of their knowledge of United States' history.

Theodore Gibson Oratorical Contest: Grades K-5 students may refine research, writing and public speaking skills by participating in this challenging oratorical contest.

ü  Contests: Offered year-round for student participation, the various contests motivate students to learn and apply knowledge and skills associated with social studies content. See the “Weekly Briefings” tab on the department’s website for contest opportunities throughout the academic year.
