This text can be used throughout the week to link the scientific studies Mr Franklin is undertaking and why conservation of any area is of great importance.

ONE SMALL ISLAND - The Story of Macquarie Island

Alison Lester and Coral Tulloch

Teachers note: This story has two distinct parts.

The first is a story about the island and the impact humans and introduced animals have had on it. It follows the islands existence through to today.

The second is a series of details journal entries from the discovery in 1810 to 2011 and the conservation efforts of modern scientists up to date.

Younger students will benefit from listening to the basic story and teachers should discuss the journal entries making sure to have detailed discussions about the introduced animals and the impact they have on native wildlife.

Older students will find great detail and information when reading the journal entries. Students could work in teams to summarise a page and present their findings to the class.

The following link can be used for further teaching notes and important discussion points when reading the text.

Further Questions – Students will most likely not know the answers to these questions. This is what we are aiming to find out. By the end of the project students will have a good understanding of how to answer these questions.

What is the problem in the story?

How is this similar to the problem in the outback?

Is the history of this island like the history of Charles Darwin reserve?

What can we do to help?
