BEFORE:
- Give opening instructions
- Okay class, today we are going to have a quick discussion, read a cool book, and do an activity afterwards. Does anybody have any questions before we get started?
- Discuss the vocabulary words(write them on the white board for a visual)
- Who can tell me what the word “excited” means? When do we say it?
- Who can tell me what the word “diamond” means? What do we use them for?
- What does the word “grain” means? What do we do with grain?
- Who can tell me what the word “decided” means? Can you give me an example in a sentence?
- Activate prior knowledge by asking questions before the read aloud.
- How many days have you guys been in school? Do you know? Can you guess?
- Have you ever spent a long time at home or at school getting ready for a big project? What are some examples? Give my example…
- How many of you have ever been excited about a project or something you were doing at school like a play or concert and you got sick and couldn’t go?
- How did that make you feel?
- Intro Book
- The book we are going to read today is “One Hundred Days (Plus One)” written by Margaret McNamara and illustrated by Mike Gordon.
- What do you think this book is going to be about? (Show the cover and some pages throughout the book and make some predictions)
DURING:
- Stop during the reading to ask clarifying questions
- Right There – What were they celebrating? There 100th day in school (page 6)
- Think and Search – How many Buttons did Hannah find on Wednesday? 23 (page12 and 13)
- Author and Me – What did Hannah’s friends do for her? They had another party the next day of school and brought their 100 things in plus one
- On My Own – How would you feel if you were Hannah and why?
- Pick out a few times where you will stop and activate schema by sharing a personal story that’s relates to it.
AFTER:
- Summarize the book and ask questions to pull it back together
- So what was the story about?
- What happened to Hannah?
- What happened in the end?
- Give instructions for the graphic organizer
- Now I want everyone to go back to his or her desks and look at the paper in front of you.
- This is a graphic organizer. Who knows what this is? When did we use this last?
- Get into groups of two and fill out the questions in each of the squares.
- Then we will come back and discuss them as a class.
- If you finish early, turn the paper over and you may draw a picture to go along with the story.
- Grab a pencil, book to write on, and your graphic organizer to the carpet.
- Go over the answers and fill out a graphic organizer on the Promethean(be sure to pick on the struggling readers when they raise their hands to be sure they understand and get a chance to answer)
Closure
Today we read the book “One Hundred Days Plus One” written by Margaret McNamara and illustrated by Mike Gordon. We learned some new vocabulary, worked our “prediction” muscles, and completed a graphic organizer discussing the characters, setting, problem and solutions of the book. What did we learn about Hannah and her class? Tomorrow we will be reading an autobiography about a woman and her airplane.
