Small Island Read 2007

One Glasgow Many Cultures: Short Story Competition

Glasgow is a diverse and exciting city and we want to celebrate its diversity through a short story competition. The theme, One Glasgow Many Cultures, can be interpreted in any way you like – it might be the story of your grandmother coming from Ireland as a young girl, it could be a friendship at school that you have made with a child from another continent or it could be your own journey from a remote Scottish island to the heart of urban life. Whether you have lived in Glasgow all your life or are a new arrival to the city, we are keen to hear from you. We want to celebrate a new generation of writers so whether you have lots of experience or have never tried writing creatively before, this is your chance to make your voice heard. You may see your story published in The Herald and celebrated at a live event as part of Aye Write! Bank of Scotland Book Festival in Glasgow.

The competition is free to enter. All ages welcome.

Please send us your story (no more than 1,000 words) on A4 paper, typed or word processed, by 31st January 2007. Remember to include your name, address, phone number and age (if under 18). We would like the stories to be in English. Please tell us if English is not your first language.

Your local library has free use of computers for up to two hours per day. You can hand in entries there, email or post to One Glasgow Many Cultures Stories, The Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow, G3 7DN

For more information please phone 0141 287 2865 fax 0141 287 2815 or email

Please note that work submitted under your name must be your own. By entering the competition, you grant the organisers of Aye Write! and Small Island Read 2007 the right to reproduce and promote story (whether or not it is a winning entry) for purposes of publicising the festival and the project.
