The International Network of Basin Organization (INBO) was established in 1994. INBO goal is to promote an integrated waterresources management at the level of riversand lakes basins and aquifers as an essential step for a sustainable development.
To accomplish thisobjective INBO seeks to develop lasting relationships among water management organizations. Furthermore, INBO objectives comprise theexchange information and the implementation of water management tools, as well as the development of information and training programs,the encouragement of population’s awareness and the promotion of integrated water resource management in national and internationalprograms.
INBO has 188 member organizations and permanent observers in 68 countries.
EUROPE-INBO is a group of European basin organizations concerned with the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) andintegrated water resources management.
At present, 110 river basin districts are established across the EU, Switzerland and Norway, ofwhich 40 are transboundary.
MENBO, the Mediterranean Network of Basin Organizations, CEENBO, the Central and Eastern Europe Network of basin Organizations, EECCA-NBO, the Eastern Europe Caucasus and Central Asia Network of Basin Organizations, were established as regional networks under INBO umbrella at the Pan – European and Mediterranean Regions level.
After the 6th World water Forum and the UN – RIO+20 Conference, the EUROPE-INBO Conference will be an opportunity to discuss solutions, within the European Water Framework Directive and its Daughter directives, for better management of riverbasins, aquifers and coastal waters in a changing world impacted by social and political challenges and to prepare the next steps of their implementation.
