OL READING ASSIGNMENT

On May 24, 2017 a reading assignment is due. You will have nine weeks to work on it. Throughout the nine weeks you will be reading independently. Bring your book to class EVERY DAY. When you finish your book, turn in the summary to me.

In order to achieve credit for reading your pages, you must write a summary of the book and provide an MLA bibliographic citation. You must have at least 5 sentences for every 100 pages of your book. This doesn’t mean you need to write a summary every 100 pages (although you can), just that your summary should be of adequate length. You can read anything for pages, except: magazines, books assigned in a previous grade, The Hunger Game Series, The Harry Potter Series, Divergent Series, The Fault in Our Stars, or unpublished books (No Wattpad). This anything includes, graphic novels or manga (credit for ½ the pages is given since it’s mostly pictures), nonfiction, biographies, etc. As long as you write a summary that demonstrates that you have read it, credit will be given. Do not plagiarize.

Turn in the summaries when you finish the book. Do not save your summaries until the last day they can be turned in. Only one summary will be accepted on the due date. This means that you will not be allowed to turn in several summaries on that day. Every time you turn in a summary, be sure to have the book with you when you turn in the summary, so I can verify the number of pages.

Summaries should be arranged as follows:

Bibliography

Plot: Beginning – Middle – End

Summary should essentially be a STORY MAP paragraph form.

This is the grading scale for the assignment:

314-350 pages – A

279-313 pages – B

261-279 pages – C

244-260 pages – D

243-0 pages – F

Plagiarism: If your summary, even parts of it, are found online this will be considered plagiarism. Please make sure you use your own words and that you DO NOT take them from any other source.

All of the pages DO NOT have to be from one book. You can read one 350 page book or a few smaller books that add up to 350 pages, or a combination. Every 50 pages over 350 will earn you one extra point (there will be a maximum of 10 points).

Use this sheet of paper to keep track of your pages. This is the sheet you MUST have to get my signature. If you think you might lose it, make a copy. It is also available on my website.

Use the lines to keep track of your books and to obtain my signature is below.

Remember, if you read a book in Reading Strategies, you may write a summary with a bibliography over that book. It will count for your pages! Your strategies teacher will sign on your summary to verify the number of pages.J

Reading Assignment Checks

Reading Assignment Checks will look for PROGRESS of the reading assignment.

EARLY CHECK: To earn a 100, you will need to have read 100 or more pages by the early check. If you have already turned in a summary for a book that is 100 or more pages, you have achieved this check and will receive a 100 for your formative grade. If you are in the middle of a book, you will write a response based on what you have read so far and get credit for those pages. If you have read at least 100 pages you will receive a 100, if not, your grade will reflect the number of pages you have read, not to go below a 50.

I want to read pages this nine weeks.

My goal is to become a lifelong reader!

I have read and understood both sides of this assignment. I understand it is my responsibility to keep up with my reading.
