SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2018

The April meeting of the Jefferson Township Historical Society will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10:00 am in the White Church building located in Eldersville on Fire Road across from the fire hall. If you are unsure where we are located, type into your GPS the address of 12 Fire Road, Burgettstown, PA 15021.

Chris Sedlak is back. We welcome Chris Sedlak back as our guest speaker at our Jefferson Township Historical Society monthly meeting on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Chris graduated from Burgettstown High School and received his B.A. from York College. He was sworn into Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Police as a Police Officer in 2001, where he remains today as a Sergeant. Chris has been a Civil War historian since 1990.

As always, Chris Sedlak has an outstanding program planned. The title of his program is “On Campaign with the Army of the Potomac” – The Diary of Theodore Ayrault Dodge, 119th NY Infy. Theodore Dodge was a very educated young man when the war broke out in 1861. His education and talent led to his appointment as Adjutant of the regiment and resulted in an extremely insightful Diary. Although he speaks of battle, this Diary is a wonderful and many times comical look at military and civilian life in America in the mid-19th century.

Join us for a presentation of select passages from Lt. Dodge’s Diary, further insight into them by Chris Sedlak and a few unexpected turns.

You do not have to be a member of the Historical Society to enjoy this program. Refreshments will be available and there is always social time after the meeting.

“COVERING the BLUE” –

Helping Wounded Police Officers and Correction Officers

“Covering the Blue” – This new group organized by Diane Huggins is growing by leaps and bounds but there is still room for you. This group of ladies are crocheting Thin Blue Line Lap Covers for Wounded Police Officers and Correction Officers. They have sent out 24 covers with 35 listed Officers on the data base. That leaves 11 that need covers with 16 people crocheting covers. The need is great to cover the wounded with lap blankets and your help would be greatly appreciated.

If you cannot crochet, you are welcome to give a donation to help with the cost of mailing covers to Wounded Police Officers and Correction Officers. If you send a check, please make it payable to JTHS/Covering the Blue and mail to Jefferson Township Historical Society, JTHS/Covering the Blue, Box 383, Burgettstown, PA 15021. Because of the convenience of the internet, help is being given to Wounded Officers across the country. This group is reaching out with love to do something good for our Officers. What an opportunity you are being given to help!

You may also help by purchasing yarn for those that are crocheting. They need donations of Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo Yarn in Royal Blue and Black. All the lap blankets will be the same. For donations of yarn, please contact Diane at 724 947 9782.

Retired Lt. Randy Sutton from Las Vegas has high-lighted the group on his Facebook live show, “Cocktails with Randy.” If you are on Facebook, you can find the group under Covering the Blue and look up Randy Sutton. He was the most highly decorated Officer on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

This work is very important as so many officers have fallen. The group wants them to know that they cover them with their love and support. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated by the group but mostly by the Wounded Officers receiving the lap blankets.
