Job Title: On-Call Vessel Watchman/Engineer - Ketchikan
Immediate Supervisor: Chief Engineer
Summary of Responsibilities:
Watchman:
Serves as security watch over entire lay-by vessel on an on-call basis; tend lines as needed for tide change and storm surges; clean vessel as assigned by Chief Engineer. Assist with any maintenance he or she may be assigned with during on-call hours.
Engineer:
Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer the On-Call Vessel Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer in the inspection, maintenance, modification and repair of ships machinery and systems on an on-call basis.
As leaders in the marine transportation industry IFA employees are responsible to instill an atmosphere with passengers that riding the ferry is pleasure, not just a need. To that end every IFA employee is responsible for overall passenger safety and satisfaction. All necessary steps must be taken to correct conditions or to report conditions that could endanger passenger safety or satisfaction in any manner both on and off the vessels. This includes IFA vessels, vehicles, access ramps, offices, terminals and terminal grounds.
Specific Duties:
As On-Call Watchman, duties will include but not be limited to:
- Maintain no visitor policy during on-call watch, unless they are IFA employees or contracted staff;
- Make sure all aprons, gangways, hatches, and doors are secure from non-employee entry; make frequent rounds to all spaces of the vessel to maintain security checks, machinery checks, bilge checks, or anything out or the ordinary;
- Keep watch on all mooring lines for chaffing, tension, slack and wraps on bollards and cleats;
- Clean vessel as directed including but not limited to decks, windows, restrooms, tables, settees, chairs, store rooms, lockers, counters, desks, walls, and stairwells.
- Call Chief Engineer or Operations Manager if a serious problem exists or may arise and assistance is needed;
- Assist the Chief Engineer with any maintenance duties during on-call watch including but not limited to painting, oil changes, stocking, inventory, repairs to machinery and auxiliary equipment as directed.
As On-call Engineer duties will include but not be limited to:
- Perform moderately complex tasks associated with inspection, maintenance, modification and repair projects as directed by Chief Engineer.
Knowledge and Abilities:
On-call Watchman:
- Must understand mooring and line handling, knots, rigging, winches, capstans, and related deck gear; ability to move quickly and understand nautical terms related to mooring and lines;
- Knowledge of vessel security procedures and emergency contact procedures;
- General knowledge of machinery spaces and ability to recognize a problem if one exists; knowledge of problem escalation procedures;
- Knowledge of lighting and electrical outlets throughout the vessel;
- Must be able to understand, speak and write in English;
- Must be self motivated and have the ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimum supervision.
On-call Engineer:
- Knowledge of the location, function, limits, capabilities, current condition, normal and emergency operating, servicing, over haul and repair procedures of all systems, power plants, auxiliary motors, electrical and mechanical equipment, emergency and firefighting equipment, and all related machinery;
- Knowledge of tools, equipment and related materials/hardware used to accomplish maintenance and repair of marine systems including mechanical, propulsion, piping systems, fire pumps, CO2 systems, fire extinguishers, various filters, strainers, and diesel engines in general.
- Ability to work without direct supervision; be self-motivated;
- Good organizational and time management skills;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Ability to function effectively under time constraints and in emergency situations;
- Ability to analyze the relative costs and benefits of potential actions.
Hours:
This is an On-call position with no guarantee of hours.
On-call Watchman must be available for duty on nights when there are storm conditions between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00am. Occasionally the On-call Watchman will be required to cover during day hours and weekends. The Chief Engineer will work out the scheduling for On-call Watchman.
On-call Engineer must be available for duty as needed on a project to project basis. The Chief Engineer will work out the scheduling for the On-call Engineer.

Compensation
This is an on-call hourly position with no benefits except IFA travel benefits when eligibility requirements have been met.
