The National University of Ireland Galway seeks to appoint a Professor of Human Rights Law and Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, within the School of Law.

The Irish Centre for Human Rights has developed a global reputation for excellence in the field of human rights teaching, research and advocacy, which has enabled it to attract high quality students to its acclaimed postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. Its success is reflected in the calibre and diversity of its doctoral and masters students in particular.

Graduates from the Centre's renowned doctoral programme have pursued successful careers in academia, as well as with international and non-governmental

organisations. A particular hallmark of the Centre is the fact that many graduates are now well-established academics throughout the world, but especially in the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and North America.

In filling the Established Professorship in Human Rights Law, NUI Galway is seeking a person with an international reputation for academic excellence in Human Rights Law combined with strong leadership skills who will complement the existing strengths of the Centre and enable it to develop new areas of activity in line with its future strategic priorities.

S/he will normally have a doctoral- level degree in Human Rights Law and a substantial record of teaching and research, the later evidenced by substantial publications in the broad field of human rights.

The post-holder will also be the Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights at a critical time in its development having enjoyed tremendous success, nationally and internationally, particularly since 2000.

Academic staff members of the Centre are engaged in research of high international standing in a number of fields including: human rights, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, peace operations, ethnic conflict, political violence and transitional justice, socio-legal studies, Islamic law, Middle Eastern studies and Business and Human Rights.

The post-holder, as the recognised leader of the sub-discipline of Human Rights in the School of Law, will contribute to the development of the education and research programmes of the School. The Established Professor of Human Rights Law, in his or her role as Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, will also contribute positively and proactively to the collective leadership of the School of Law. S/he will be expected to work with colleagues in the Irish Centre for Human Rights, the School of Law and other stakeholders to develop an ambitious Strategic Plan for the Centre reflecting the most relevant emphases of the University’s current strategic plan, Vision 2020.

In addition to the standard roles and responsibilities of an Established Professor the post-holder should also have the following qualities:

·  Evidence of an ability to converse across disciplines with a view to increasing the collaborative involvements of the Irish Centre for Human Rights;

·  Strong capacity for engagement of an ‘ambassadorial’ kind, nationally and internationally;

·  Maintain and enhance the standing of the ICHR as a hub of postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral research in the field of human rights law;

·  Capacity to mentor and manage so as to enable high performance by the staff of the Centre in a spirit of collegiality;

·  Maintain and enhance the reputation of the ICHR for achieving high-level public policy impact, nationally and internationally with a proven capacity for effective media engagement;

·  A willingness to cultivate an exceptional network of alumni with global reach as partners in enhancing graduate career development and future student recruitment.

Salary:

€106,515 to €136,275

(This appointment will be made on the Established Professor scale in line with current Government pay policy)

BACKGROUND

The School of Law is one of the largest and most innovative Law Schools in Ireland. It has an outstanding record of achievement in teaching, research, and service to the University and wider community. There are approximately 800 students studying law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in NUI Galway with a strong emphasis on postgraduate programmes (Masters and doctoral level) in the School’s two Centres, the Irish Centre for Human Rights and the Centre for Disability Law & Policy. Since 2008 the School exists within the College of Business, Public Policy & Law but it contributes to programmes across all Colleges of the University.

Job Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The post-holder duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Teaching

To give instruction and supervision, as directed by the Head of School, to students of the University in courses and programmes organised by the School or to which the School contributes to another School or College. Such duties to include curriculum and course design, preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, project supervision and general examination and other assessment responsibilities. The post-holder is also required to be available to students for academic counselling and advice. Academic activities may also include workshop or clinical instruction, supervision of fieldwork, site visits and other off-campus activities.

Research

To engage in research and other creative and innovative activity as appropriate to the discipline. The post-holder is required to disseminate their research in academic publications, other outlets as appropriate and to participate in postgraduate supervision. The post-holder is encouraged to engage in initiatives to seek research funding, as appropriate. The post-holder is also encouraged to promote and engage in the development of collaborative research.

Contribution and Scholarly Activity

To participate in academic administration at School, College and University levels as part of their contribution to the University. To engage with the wider community regionally, nationally and internationally from a civic, economic, social and cultural perspective as a contribution to the life of the University. In representing the University externally, the post-holder is expected to maintain the highest professional standards, thereby enhancing the reputation of the University. The post-holder is expected to engage in scholarly activity such as, but not limited to, refereeing of journals, membership of discipline related advisory bodies and peer review panels and work associated with external examinership.

The post-holder shall carry out these duties under the direction of the Head of the School or of an authorised senior member of the staff of the School.

The post-holder shall be a member of College/Colleges in accordance with University Statutes.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements:

·  Normally a PhD in Human Rights Law, with considerable experience of working and leading programmes of teaching and research in that broad subject area;

·  An established international reputation in the area of Human Rights with an emphasis on academic reputation and strong evidence of impact;

·  Experience of engagement with policy development in the area of Human Rights at national and international level;

·  Substantial experience of leading research teams and supervision of PhD students;

·  Strong track record appropriate to a professorial-level appointment of publications in a substantial number of highly-ranked journals and of papers delivered at leading conferences;

·  Substantial experience of teaching Human Rights Law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;

·  Experience of leading or participating in funding applications involving national and international agencies with exposure to an appropriate level inter-disciplinarity required for such work;

·  Strong experience of academic planning and administration with an emphasis on planning and leading education and research programmes;

·  Demonstrable evidence of strong team leadership capability and success with a proven capacity for collegiality.

Desirable Requirements:

·  A recognised qualification in teaching and learning in higher education;

·  Multi-lingual proficiency;

·  A critical awareness of national and international issues in higher education planning and management.
