Older Adult IPE Event

Description: Students from various programs will be joining together to explore the topics of interprofessional education and the provision of healthcare to older adults. As part of this experience, students will be charged with clearly defining his/her respective profession and the roles and responsibilities (as related to IPEC® Core Competency 2). Additionally, students will communicate with older adults in order to explore their experiences related to healthcare (access to care, personal preferences, comfort level, health literacy, etc.).

Objectives

IPE Objectives (based on IPEC® 2016 Core Competencies)

Core Competency 2: Students will use the knowledge of their own role and those of other professions in order to appropriately assess and address health care needs and promote and advance the health of the older adult population.

Students will:

  1. Communicate one’s roles and responsibilities clearly to other students and professionals.
  2. Communicate one’s roles and responsibilities clearly to older adult community members.
  3. Have an understanding of how to use unique and complementary abilities of all members of the team to optimize older adult health and patient care.
  4. Forge interdependent relationships with other profession to improve care and advance learning.
  5. Describe how professionals in health and other fields can collaborate and integrate clinical care and public health interventions to optimize public health of the older adult population.

Outline for the Event:

  1. To be completed prior to the event:
  2. Students will submit interview questions for older adults based on topics which are relevant to their respective profession and older adult health care.
  3. Students will review interview questions that will be asked
  4. Student Round Up:
  5. Introductions
  6. Explanation of one’s roles and responsibilities within their profession
  7. Work together to delegate roles and responsibilities within the group for the day. Each group should have a designated recorder to take notes and reporter who will share group’s insight during debriefing. **Please note that it is up to each group to decide if there will be a facilitator, the person/people who will ask interview questions, and how tasks will be divided.
  8. Keynote Speaker
  9. Older Adult Interviews:
  10. Introductions: Each student must introduce him/herself and communicate his/her profession’s roles and responsibilities to the older adult interviewee
  11. Ask provided questions and scribe answers
  12. Ask additional questions as you see fit
  13. Small group debriefing:
  14. Based on the answers of your older adults:
  15. Determine at least 2 ways to improve healthcare provision to older adults
  16. Determine at least 1 public intervention (workshop, presentation, written resource) that your group could offer. **Please note what each profession’s role would be in this intervention.
  17. Large debriefing:
  18. Report your group’s ideas for healthcare improvement (as listed above).
  19. Listen to other group’s ideas for healthcare improvement

  1. Overall, do you feel comfortable when you are receiving medical care (doctor’s appointments, therapy visits, procedures, etc.)? Why? Why not?
  2. Do you feel comfortable asking healthcare professionals questions? Why? Why not?
  3. Do you feel that healthcare professionals spend enough time addressing your healthcare needs (both in and out of appointments)? Why? Why not?
  4. Do you feel that healthcare professionals spend enough time explaining things to you and use terms that are easy to understand? Can you give an example of a positive or negative experience related to this?
