SIGNALLING AND

PERMANENT WAY ARRANGEMENTS

COMMISSIONING OF GLASGOW CENTRAL INTERLOCKING RENEWALS AND TRANSFER OF CONTROL TO THE NEW WEST OF SCOTLAND SIGNALLING CENTRE (WSSC)

OPENING ARRANGEMENTS

The arrangements described in this notice and as shown on the accompanying diagram will be introduced at 0630 on Saturday 27th December and progressively commissioned until completion at 0400 on Tuesday 30th December

Description of scheme

The work associated with this scheme will comprise:

·  Renewal work within the Glasgow Central interlocking area (station area to Eglinton Jn. inclusive and to Shields Jn. exclusive)

·  Transfer of control of the existing Glasgow Central SC area of control to a new signalling centre which will be brought into use, designated “West of Scotland Signalling Centre (WSSC)”

·  The re-naming of all lines and sidings on the approach to Glasgow Central station together with the re-numbering of some of the station platforms to facilitate future alterations associated with the Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL) scheme.

·  Conversion of the majority of main running signals within the Glasgow Central interlocking area to LED type and re-numbering of all signals within this area to the GG5XXX number series.

·  Removal of the majority of ground position light signals within the Glasgow Central interlocking area with conversion of the remainder to 3 aperture LED type capable of displaying Red/Red White/White within the above number series.

·  Remodelling of the track layout in the former Smithy Lye area (described below in greater detail)

·  Provision of staff lockout systems (as detailed below)

Method of working

Track Circuit Block working will continue to apply throughout the former Glasgow Central area of control (now under the control of West of Scotland SC).

Permissive working arrangements at Glasgow Central station will be unchanged.

Signalling arrangements

All main signals within the Glasgow central interlocking area, with the exception of GG5201 and GG5203, will be renewed with searchlight type LED signal heads.

Where applicable, within the interlocking renewal area, existing white light directional junction route indicators will be removed and replaced with standard alpha numeric route indicators (miniature indicators for PLS routes).

Permanent speed restrictions

The existing permanent speed restriction of 25mph on the Down Fast and Down Slow lines, between 101m 31ch and 101m 56ch (Bridge Street Jn.) will be altered to commence at 101m 33ch (Note – this is a correction to Sectional Appendix, Table “A” detail only). New speed restriction indicators will be provided.

The existing Down direction permanent speed restriction of 20mph on Line 2 and Line 4, between 101m 56ch (Bridge Street Jn.) and Gantry “A” will be altered to commence at 101m 57ch. A new miniature speed restriction indicator will be provided on Line 2 with a supplementary board worded “ALL ROUTES”. A new speed restriction indicator will be provided on Line 4 with a supplementary board worded “ALL ROUTES”.

Permanent speed restrictions (Continued)

The existing Up direction permanent speed restriction of 25mph on Lines 1, 2 and 4, between 101m 56ch and 101m 31ch (Up Slow and Up Fast) will be altered to be between 101m 53ch and 101m 33ch (Note – this latter datum is a correction to Sectional Appendix, Table “A” detail only). New speed restriction indicators will be provided accordingly. The Line 2 indicator will be of the miniature type. The line 4 indicator will be on right of drivers.

The existing permanent speed restriction of 30mph on the Up Muirhouse line between 0m 65ch and Muirhouse South Jn. (Barrhead line) and Pollokshields East (Down Outer Circle) will be altered to commence at 0m 60ch.

The existing permanent speed restriction of 25mph on the Down Muirhouse line between 0m 65ch and 101m 56ch (Line 4 at Bridge Street Jn.) will be altered to commence at 0m 68ch.

Smithy Lye remodelling

No. 2 Depot line will be removed together with the connection to the existing Through siding.

No. 1 Depot line will be redesignated Depot line. A new set of trap points will be installed on the Depot line immediately on the Shields Jn. side of new ground position light signal GG5841.

The existing Through siding will be redesignated Up and Down Smithy Lye single line. The connection with the former Smithy Lye carriage sidings will be removed The connections to and from the Smithy Lye line at the Bridge Street Jn. end will be remodelled and the existing crossover at the former No. 2 Depot line removed together with the crossover immediately on the bridge Street Jn side of existing ground position light signal G202 (new number GG5834). The Smithy Lye line will be realigned at that end.

The diagram outlines the revised arrangement at this location.

Lockout Systems

Lockout systems for the protection of staff on or about the line will be provided as under:-

All platform lines at Glasgow Central

Line 1 and 2

Line 3 and 4

Up Ayr

Down Ayr

AWS

AWS track equipment will now be provided as follows: _

Inbound

Up to Gantry G signals GG5241 (Line 4), GG5243 (Line 3) and GG5245 (Line 2) (incl.)

Up to Gantry K signals GG5830 (Down Ayr, Up direction) and GG5832 (Up Ayr)

Outbound

From Gantry I signals GG5224 (Line 1) and GG5228 (Line 3) (incl.)

From Gantry L signals GG5835 (Down Ayr) and GG5837 (Up Ayr, Down direction) (incl.)


4.

AWS - Continued

All AWS track equipment associated with platform signals (SPAD magnets) will be removed.

TPWS

Additional TPWS equipment will be provided on platform lines applying to platform exit signals in accordance with current requirements.

Signs

All Gantries will be provided with line ID plates located above the signals. These will provide continuous route information to drivers arriving and departing from the station.
