General information

New offshore oil and gas deposits are an important resource of the world energy growth. The challenging task of exploring and developing offshore zones can be fulfilled only by joint efforts of different countries. Training professionals is believed an essential part of these efforts.

Two Universities

Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Russia, and University of Stavanger (UiS), Norway, have associated their experience in research and teaching to establish a joint Master's degree program in ‘Offshore Field Development Technology’.

This program has beendesigned to meet the growing industry demand for highest level professionals with an international profile.

The joint master degree program will enable students to draw on:

  • interactive and dynamiclearning environment of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas created within the framework of the Federal innovative project ‘Education’;
  • experience ofNorwegian professionals whose expertise encompasses not only cutting edge theoretical concepts, but also extensive industry experiencein offshore fields development;.
  • access to modern and well-equipped facilities in Russia and Norway.

Two sources

Complementing the academic staff, visiting academics and industry managers provide added depth, experience and global diversity to the program.

This program might attract professionals interested in theory and systemized practical experience.

Two years

Duration of the program is two years. All teachingprocess will be conducted in English in Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas and University of Stavanger.

Two Diplomas

After successful completion of the program all students who fulfill without fail the requirements of two Universities will receive a Master of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering from GubkinUniversity – a state accredited diploma, Master’s program‘Offshore Field Development Technology’.

In University of Stavanger the students will receivea Master of Science Diploma in ‘Offshore Field Development Technology’.

Three locations

Students will study in Moscow, in Stavanger and also will complete an internship in major oil and gas companies.

Course “Arctic Offshore Technology” is annually taught by an international team of professors at the Universityof Studies on Spitsbergen (UNIS). It is anticipated that

students participating in this Program will travel to Spitsbergen to take this course during the 3rd semester of their studies while in Norway.

Multiple careeropenings

The main area for job opportunities is offshore oil and gas industry. However, the graduates are to be very well qualified for many attractive job positions in traditional industries.

Upon completion of the Master program, participants are expected to be highly competitive for acquiring positions in the international and national upstream oil and gas industry (operators, services companies, governmental agencies), according to the obtained specialty.Students can get a career impulse thanks to close ties between universities and industry, as well as direct contacts with professionals and managers from big companies during their studies and internship.

Graduates of the program are currently working in the most prestigious Russian and international companies and have good career prospects.

Program description

The joint programmeets all modern European criteria for master degrees.

The program consists of a combination of compulsory and elective industry relevant courses.

It is designed to provide graduating engineers with the knowledgeand skills required to become technology leaders, supervisors and managersnot only within their specialty but in adjacent areas, too.

The program is based on existing courses at both universities. Emphasis will be in the SubSea direction.

The MSc Thesis should normally be written at the home University. Co-advisory of professors from both universities is considered.

It is envisaged that the Master of Science thesis on up-to-date issues will be based on recent research work performed at one of the universities or with industrial partners.

The students are to complete an internship in oil and gas industry during the course of the program. The internship must have a minimum duration of 6 weeks. It is preferable that the internship is completed during the summer period after the first year of studies.
