DISTRICT CONSERVATION OFFICER: ST LUCIA MARINE PROTECTED AREA (NORTH) SODWANA BAY: POST NO: 261601

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The successful applicant will be responsible for the holistic management of the Northern Section of the St Lucia Marin Protected Area (North) stationed at Sodwana Bay. Control of visitors on the beach and in the marine environment. Management of a very popular off shore recreational diving and fishing fraternity. Managing two (2) budgets, eight (8) staff members and supervision of Projects in the field. This post concentrates on Marine related issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Diploma in Nature Conservation or equivalent.
  • Valid Code EB Drivers Licence
  • Valid (current) skippers and SCUBA diving qualification is essential.
  • Firearm competency is essential.

EXPERIENCE

5 years management experience, preferably with Marine experience. A proven record in Marine Conservation management. The incumbent must also have a record of launching boat through a high energy surf zone with boat maintenance and beach driving experience.

KEY COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Experience in marine related law enforcement and compliance
  • Knowledge of the Nature Conservation Ordinance, NEMA and Marine Living Resources Act would be an advantage
  • Good communication skills in English, Afrikaans and isiZulu.
  • Subsistence fishing is an important aspect and a proven record in this sphere is essential. Experience in budgeting, Financial Management and knowledge of PFMA.
  • Proven ability to deal with large number of visitors and conflict. *Sound knowledge of biodiversity conservation. (Marine).
  • Sound administrative skills with the ability to control an inventory and a budget.
  • Proven track record of staff management and human resources skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, complex environment that services a diversity of stakeholders.
  • A strong swimmer.
  • Proven Ski Boat and SCUBA diving experience.
  • Proven record with regard to beach driving..

  • Participation in and management of the short and long term strategic goals in respect of conservation management and related operational objectives and requirements.
  • Ability to apply adaptive management and direct operations to prevailing circumstances.
  • Sound communication skills at all levels.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the maintenance of standards and the motivation of personnel. Ability to pre-empt, respond to and follow up on all threats directed at the protected area. Budget estimates and control.
  • Be prepared to work as a team member.
  • Have a good understanding of the sea.
  • Driving on the beach
