Class Auditing Policy

(Updated November 11, 2016)

PROCEDURES

To audit a course, registered UNC students and Non-UNC students must follow the procedures listed below inorder to audit a course at UNC during any semester (Fall, Spring or Summer School):

  1. The Instructor, student and Biology Director of Undergraduate Studies (on behalf of the Biology Department Chair) needs to sign the Course Auditing form. Non-UNC students need to fill out both forms (see below).
  2. Bring this signed form to Summer Montgomery in 213 Coker Hall. She will prepare and sign an Add/Audit form for you.
  3. There are different procedures for UNC students and non-UNC students:
  4. UNC students (officially registered for courses in the same term) take both forms to the Registrar (SASB North, Suite 3100) and they will register you. No additional fee is required.
  5. Non-UNC students take all the signed forms to the Cashier’s Office (SASB North, Suite 2215) to pay a $20 fee. Next, take the completed form and receipt to the Registrar’s Office in the same building, SASB North, Suite 3100 to be registered. You will be asked to provide additional information (full name, date of birth, etc.) when you bring the Add form and receipt to University Registrar’s Office. This information will be used to register you as an auditor in our system. A copy of the registration transaction will be given to the student if requested to provide to the class instructor at the beginning of the term.

Requests to audit a course may be submitted only after the end of the official registration period (last day for students to add a course or late register) when it has been determined that there is still space available in the class. This procedure applies to theFall and Spring semesters and both Summer Sessions.

Auditing of courses is permitted only in lecture-based courses and NEVER in courses that include required laboratories or field work.

(Continued)

Auditing is not permitted in courses that focus on the development of written or oral communication skills or courses that rely heavily on class participation. Auditing is not permitted in independent studies courses, internships, special topics, directed readings, or similar courses.

PARTICIPATION

Auditors do not write papers, take quizzes or examinations, request review of written work, and do not participate in class discussions unless otherwise directed by the course instructor.

RECORDS AND GRADES

Auditors will be required to register for any course that they have been approved to audit. Auditors will appear on the instructor’s class roll but may not request grades. No transcript of record will be issued and no grades accepted by the Office of the University Registrar. This change in business process was guided by the need to have an accurate listing of individuals in a classroom if there were to be an emergency situation, and to observe maximum seating limits as set by the fire marshal.

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES

Students cannot audit courses in the Friday Center for Continuing Education (Part-time Classroom Studies, Carolina Courses Online, Self-paced Courses, or Tutorial Programs), or courses preparing the student for Credit By Exam.
