MINUTES

Present: John Fuller, Wayne Fett, Andrew Hirst, Joshua Smith, Liz Christiansen, Andrew Lynch, George McCrory, Michelle Ribble

On Iowa! Bike Tour Report – Wayne reported that the tours were moderately busy the entire time and that On Iowa! organizers want to do it again. He said that moving it to Cleary Walkway was a very good idea.

Tune-up Day report – Andrew L said the event is scheduled for September 19th from 2-4 PM in Hubbard Park. World of Bikes will bring a van. Thebike-powered smoothie machine is currently broken and they’re waiting for a part. Wayne asked about a different weekend in order to get more participation? Andrew H said he didn’t think it would make a difference. Wayne asked that next year we should think about a game weekend. He said that about 500 students work in Rec Services and they always ask for time off for game. Andrew L said URPSA is lined up for supplies.

IDOT grant – Willy will submit the ICAAP grant on October 1 or before.

Jingle Cross: November 14th, 15th, and 16th, 2014 – Ben wanted this to be brought up. Andrew L reminded everyone that this is the largest cross event in in North America. Organizers are looking for volunteers. Please pus this information out to your colleagues!

Food For Thoughtthemed semester – Liz reported that a food-themed semester is being planned and the Provost’s office is hoping groups will hold food-related events. Ideas discussed includedbicycling out to community gardens; bike ride to berry-picking area south on Sand Road; ride to Millstream; and ride to Kalona or Big Grove breweries.

Recreational Biking Club – Andrew H and Willy have been working to establish a recreational biking club for those who are not into competitive biking. The group could help facilitate bike tune-up days and weekly rides. They are looking for an advisor. Andrew L offered to help out. John suggested co-advisors, too.

Review of BAC Action Planitems for 2014 – 2015, see attached

1. Build a data-gathering framework and begin to implement framework – Andrew L said that he and John should formulate a couple of questions for tune-up day. Also Lucie Laurien’s class,Analytic Methods 1,will be collecting info on biking.

2. Expand outreach for events on campus – George will send out list of events. Michelle suggested a calendar on the bike.uiowa.edu. – great idea!

3. Get a seat at the table during critical campus planning – Ingrid is working on design standard language. The UI currently has general guidelines only. Michelle offered to review language.

4. Establish Bike Share Program – A grant has been submitted to Coca Cola and the timeline for MPO funding has moved to Spring 2015.

5. Get BFU application in, receive designation – We are waiting for designation!

6. Complete and adopt a bicycle master plan –John reported that he and Andrew L are meeting with UISG this evening to build support. Last week, John presented the plan to the graduate student government and they voted to adopt a resolution supporting the plan. The plan will also be presented to several Charter Committees, Josh recommended Staff Council and Wayne recommended the Recreation Committee (Wayne will make contact).

7. Increase on-campus bike repair events, make tune-up days more regular and frequent – A Fall event is planned.George asked what about basic safety training. The group thought the new rec. bike club would be a great organization to promote bicycle safety. Liz has contacted Lt. Roth about police participating in safety training and the BAC.

8. Identify opportunities for facility infrastructure improvements – Andrew L has contacted Dave Ricketts about scheduling a ride around campus to highlight bicycle needs.

9. Study bike commuting incentives–Andrew did ask URP students to come to meetings and some were interested but had a conflict this morning. Josh has received interest from some staff, as well. Liz reported on planned visit to Downs Building to review the space for possible use by the Bike Library.

10. Lay groundwork for infrastructure budget - Different and efforts are feeding into this. There was some discussion on having a campus bike coordinator – about half of the Big Ten schools already have a person on board.

11. Intensify new student orientation, provide incentives – George reported on new student orientation and handing out bike information and getting the bike brochure to all RA’s. The Office of Sustainability will also be at the Health Fair and interest in biking was among the top questions during orientation. John inquired about the new event for planned for potential students – Liz will follow up. John asked about what is sent out from Parking Services to new faculty? George will follow up.
