NO. R-290. JOINT RESOLUTION congratulating the Brattleboro Savings and Loan Association on its 90th anniversary, and commending its enlightened business policies.

Whereas, the Brattleboro Savings and Loan Association is a venerable institution, having served as a special community financial resource since its incorporation on October 31, 1912, and
Whereas, as a locally-based bank, its primary focus has been on the economic vitality of Windham County, and
Whereas, thousands of area families were able to realize their dreams of owning a home, and numerous small businesses in and around Brattleboro were established or expanded due to the financial foresight which the bank has repeatedly demonstrated, and
Whereas, the Brattleboro Savings and Loan’s conscientiousness extends beyond the customer base to its employees and the area’s community and charitable institutions, and
Whereas, as a most fitting way to celebrate its 90th birthday, the bank’s management has announced that, as of January 1, 2002, all of Brattleboro Savings and Loan’s employees shall be compensated at a living wage rate of a minimum $10.25 per hour, and
Whereas, this decision intends to place into practice the bank management’s philosophy that all employees deserve to earn a living wage, and
Whereas, the Brattleboro Savings and Loan also has announced a new policy to contribute ten percent of the bank’s net profit to charitable and community organizations, an amount expected to be, annually, in excess of $80,000.00, and it excludes the financial value of the bank providing rent free access to its community room and the time employees devote to charitable activities, and
Whereas, these new policies are further evidence of the Brattleboro Savings and Loan’s emphasis on living up to its motto, “Community Banking, Community People - For All The Right Reasons,” now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is pleased to congratulate the Brattleboro Savings and Loan Association on the occasion of the bank’s 90th anniversary, and be it further
Resolved: That the Brattleboro Savings and Loan is to be commended for establishing the recently announced enlightened personnel, charitable and community donation policies, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send copies of this resolution to George S. Haynes, president and chief executive officer of the Brattleboro Savings and Loan Association and to Joseph Little, chair of the bank’s board of directors.
