Receivers and Routes:

Tight End has a name – “Joker” and just like defense, he will set the offensive strength side

We will run the standard passing tree that we have used in warm-ups

All Pass Plays are called in route order from left to right across the formation, and then finish with backfield routes

We will run a mix of single wide, twins, trips, and 4-wide formations

0 – Quick

1 – Slant

2 – Short 5 Yard Out

3 – Slant to seam

4 – Deep 10 Yard Out

5 – Deep 10 Yard In (or Dig)

We will also have named routes for backs and receivers:

Others may be added, but this is where we are at the moment.

Back Field Strength:

If the fullback is set to the left: Formation is a “Blue”

If the fullback is set to the right: Formation is a “Brown”

If we are in an I formation—no color is given because we are even down the middle.

Backfield Alignment:

The Fullback will be in one of three positions:

  1. Up – 3 yards from the LOS behind the guard on the color designated side
  2. Even – Level with the tailback at a depth of 6 yards from the LOS to the color designated side
  3. I- 3 yards from the LOS behind the QB

The fullback will be in a 3 point stance when in Up, or I, and in a 2 point stance in Even

Tailback will always be in a 2 points stance

QB can be under center for the snap, in pistol, or in shotgun depending on the formation and play call.

How do we call a play?

QB Cadence:

Ready ------Pause to check with sideline/check formation for any changes ---- Give Color Designation ------Set ------Hut------Hut (Snap on whichever hut was given in huddle)

What will a Run Play Sound Like in the huddle?

“Joker Left, Brown, Up, 24 Lead Dive”

This is a basic example, and as we do our install, we will add a few more terms as needed.

What will a typical pass play sound like in the huddle?

“White, Joker Right, Brown, Even, 431 Swing”

White tells you it’s a pass play

This tells WR to left of formation to run the 4 (you are off the LOS so you are not covering the Tight End.

Tight End is running a 3

Split to Right of Formation has the 1

Tailback runs the Swing

Fullback stays in to protect to blitz side as designated by QB

Other Formations/Adjustments:

  1. Trips – Traditional trips where outside receiver is on the line, middle receiver is about 3 yards inside of him and about a yard off of the LOS, inside receiver is 3 yards inside of second receiver and about 1 yard deeper than him.
  2. Flip Trips – Reverse of the traditional trips set. Inside receiver is on the line, middle receiver is 3 yards outside of him and about a yard off of the LOS, and the outermost receiver is about 3 yards out from the second receiver and about two yards off of the LOS.
  3. Bunch – Traditional bunch where middle receiver is up, outside and inside receiver are about 1 yard deeper than him
  4. Twins—Two receivers to the same side, outside receiver is up on line, second receiver is about 4 yards to his inside and about 1 yard off the LOS
  5. Overloads – Formations where we line up with an extra tackle to one side, or move the tackle over to create an advantage to a side. On the side opposite the overload we will have a guard, and tight end on the LOS.
  6. RPO – Run/Pass option. On some plays, the QB will make a decision based on his read of the defense whether to handoff to a designated back, keep the ball himself and run through a designated hole, or pull up, drop and throw a quick pass to a receiver. Needs to be done quickly because the O-Line will be run blocking.

How will we huddle this year?

In this offense we will have the o-line about 7 yards from the LOS with their backs to it

Next series of players will be all backs who will put hands on knees and lean forward so O-Line can see QB. This group of 5 will be about 8 yards from LOS with backs to it

QB—Faces the team and LOS, comes into the huddle at about 8 yards and address the team with the play call. The QB is the ONLY PERSON WHO SPEAKS!. It is critical that the QB commands control of the huddle, speaks clearly, and when necessary, calls for attention of the players.

QB will call the play once and the center will run up to the LOS. QB will repeat the play, break the huddle, and the remaining players will run up to the LOS for the play.
