of the summer vacation practical training in Practical Dentistry 2

for the 3rd year of Dentistry

Duration: 2 weeks (60 hours)

Place of training:Dental surgery room or dental consulting room (also private-owned), Department of Stomatology, Dept. of Oral, Jaw, and Facial Surgery.

Course of training: Students work under the leadership of a supervisor. They are obliged to observe the principles of safety at work and to work using safety and protective aids. During the whole period of their practical training they keep records of the patients whom they have treated in a list called “A Minimum of Practical Performances in Stomatology”; the entries there are continuously confirmed by the supervisor. The student submits these records when granted his/her course-unit credit.

Content of practical training:

Restorative Dentistry

The students perform independently the diagnostics and treatment of all types of dental caries, i.e. cavities of classes I to V, and work with all types of filling materials; they also treat independently caries close to the pulp. They perform independently the diagnostics of endodontic diseases and also perform all endodontic treatments, i.e. vital pulpectomies and extirpations, applications of devitalisation temporary fillings, mortal pulpectomies and extirpations, preparation and filling of root canals by means of one-pin technique, and/or lateral or vertical condensation. Diagnostics of periodontitis and treatment of both acute and chronic forms.

The individual phases are consulted with and controlled by the supervisor.

Oral Surgery

The students concentrate on principles of treatment of stomato-surgical diseases, carry out anaesthesia, extractions, treatment of inflammatory diseases, postextraction complications (especially bleeding after extraction, oroantral communication). The students are led to independent making of the diagnosis and planning of the treatment. They focus on the diagnosis of perimandibular and perimaxillary inflammations, inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, inflammations of salivary glands, sialolithiasis.

The individual stages must always be consulted with the supervisor.

Orthopaedic surgery

The students carry out independently all performances associated with making fixed restorations of all kinds, both of precious and substitute metals. Linear bridges should be preferred, shell and veneered crowns should not be avoided. All performances related to the making of removable restorations of all classes. Attention should be paid to the outlining of metal construction and attachments on plaster models.

Final evaluation should comprise all areas of stomatological performances, their quality, as well as theoretical and practical knowledge.

The respective credits will be granted after submission of the above record of practical training at the Department of Study Affairs when enrolling on a higher year of study.
