of the Academic Senate Meeting

June 2, 2010

1.  Emeritus Awards

Chair Sancho-Madriz recognized Senator Hassan Halati, Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee.

The Faculty Affairs Committee has unanimously approved nominating resolutions for the award of Emeritus to 24 distinguished members of the Cal Poly community.

M/s/p that these resolutions be received and filed as a permanent part of the Senate Archives.

M/s that these resolutions be adopted, and with adoption, they be proclaimed to the entire University community.

The motion passed unanimously.

Senator Halati will be presenting, in alphabetical order, the Emeritus Designees at the reception following the meeting in the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Major A & B.

Attached are the emeritus resolutions.

2.  Basketball Team Representatives

Chair Sancho-Madriz presented the resolution honoring the Basketball Team and its accomplishment to Greg Kamansky, Head Coach, Bill Bannon, Assistant Coach and

Damion Hill, Assistant Coach.

3. Resolution – Martin Sancho-Madriz

M/s to adopt the following resolution honoring Chair Sancho-Madriz.

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Sancho-Madriz served as Chair of the Academic Senate from June 23, 2008 to June 18, 2010 and as Vice-Chair during the previous year; and

WHEREAS, He devoted countless hours towards his duties showing great dedication and hard work; and

WHEREAS, He took an active role in shared governance with the administration as evidenced by serving as a member of the WASC Steering Committee and IT Governance Executive Committee; and

WHEREAS, He represented faculty interests by being a member of the Foundation Board; and

WHEREAS, He promoted visibility of the Academic Senate in matters that affect the interests of the faculty, staff, students, and administration, including the development of a new website, publishing a newsletter; and spearheading the creation of an online version of the University Manual; and

WHEREAS, He took an active role in educating the campus on how the Academic Senate functions; and

WHEREAS, He directed the Senate meetings in an organized, efficient, collegial and inclusive manner with a feeling of tolerance and openness; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, express its sincere appreciation to Dr. Martin Sancho-Madriz for his leadership, and concern for faculty, staff, and students; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution be permanently recorded in the Minutes and Archives of the Academic Senate in recognition of Dr. Martin Sancho-Madriz.

The motion passed unanimously.

7. Voting on Degrees

M/s/p that the Academic Senate, on behalf of the Faculty at this University, recommend to the President that the degree candidates listed in the Registrars’ List be awarded the appropriate degrees this June.

8. Closing Comments/Adjournment

Chair Sancho-Madriz thanked the Senate for the opportunity to Chair the Senate for the past two years. He congratulated Lisa Alex and David Speak.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

EMERITUS RESOLUTIONS

Judith I. Anderson

WHEREAS, The Academic Senate annually grants emeritus status to qualified and deserving faculty; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Judith Anderson, a member of the History Department at California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, has established a record of leadership and accomplishment in teaching, scholarship, and service; and

WHEREAS, Her scholarship relating to American Politics and Women’s History provided important contributions to these fields and provided a foundation for her work as a teacher and mentor for our students; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson has played a particularly distinguished role in the training and development of Single Subject credential candidate. She designed and won approval for our pre-credential curriculum, promotes pre-professional internships and training opportunities, and drives thousands of miles each year as she travels from site to site to conduct classroom visits; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson has, as a member of the American Studies and the History programs, been a part of the faculty since 1976; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona unanimously express its deepest appreciation for her years of dedicated service to the students and her colleagues at this University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the title of “Professor Emerita” be bestowed upon this faculty member; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Professor Judith Anderson in recognition of her many accomplishments and contributions, and that it be permanently recorded in the Minutes and Archives of the Academic Senate.

Richard Anderson

WHEREAS, Professor Richard Anderson has rendered distinguished service to the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona for 29 years (1980-2009); and

WHEREAS, He has served the Department of Communication, College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, and this University with great distinction; and

WHEREAS, He has taught while at Cal Poly Pomona courses in public speaking, and advocacy and argument; and

WHEREAS, He has been instrumental in developing the student learning outcomes for COM 204 (Advocacy and Argument), the GE A2 course that has benefited the critical thinking skills of thousands of Cal Poly Pomona students; and

WHEREAS, He has been a dedicated, conscientious teacher who always remained a cooperative, helpful, and reliable colleague; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, unanimously express its deepest appreciation for his many years of untiring service to the students and faculty of the University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the title of “Professor Emeritus” be bestowed upon this distinguished faculty member; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Richard Anderson in recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions, and that it be permanently recorded in the Minutes and Archives of the Academic Senate.

Dolores A. Barsellotti

WHEREAS, Dr. Dolores Barsellotti has faithfully served our University, the College of Business Administration, the International Business and Marketing Department and, most notably, our students since March, 1972 as the first female faculty hired into the department; and

WHEREAS, She is an alumna of Cal Poly Pomona, earning her MBA in 1972 as well as her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in1968; and

WHEREAS, She has served the Marketing Management Department, later named the International Business and Marketing Department, the College of Business Administration, and this University with great distinction, as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor; and

WHEREAS, She served as the Associate Vice President of Finance and Development for five years (1987-1992); and

WHEREAS, She has constantly made students her number one priority through her involvement with Pi Sigma Epsilon as its faculty adviser on campus and then on the national level as the organization’s Educator Director, Vice President of Education, National Vice-chair and its first female President; and

WHEREAS, She served as the National Director of Mu Kappa Tau (1980-96), a national honor society for Marketing majors; and

WHEREAS, She organized the School of Business Administration’s centralized advising center, still functioning as the Student Advising Center at the College of Business Administration; and

WHEREAS, As the Faculty Senate Chair, she represented the faculty in numerous committees as she served two terms (1985-1987), and also served two terms as Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate before that (1983-85); and

WHEREAS, She served on university committees like the George P. Hart Faculty Leadership Award, where she served as chair and worked to raise the funds for the endowment to sustain this award (1996-2004); and

WHEREAS, She served on a number of college committees like the CBA Faculty Development Assigned Time committee and the Faculty/Staff Alumni Leadership Committee (1996-97); and

WHEREAS, She served on many departmental committees, like the Department RTP Committee, Department Post-Tenure Review Committee, Departmental Curriculum Committee, Department Lecturer Evaluation Committee, and she served on the Executive Board of the Center for Professional Sales Development; and

WHEREAS, She has come to be revered for her professionalism, dedication and uncompromising standards by her students and colleagues alike; and

WHEREAS, She has consistently demonstrated creativity in her scholarly pursuits as witnessed by her participation and presentation in a number of conferences in marketing and international business; and

WHEREAS, She has been a most highly valued colleague and friend; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona unanimously express its deepest appreciation for her years of dedicated service to the students and her colleagues at this University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the title of “Professor Emerita” be bestowed upon this faculty member; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Professor Dolores Barsellotti in recognition of her many accomplishments and contributions, and that it be permanently recorded in the Minutes and Archives of the Academic Senate.

Robert Bray

WHEREAS, Professor Robert E. Bray has rendered distinguished service to the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona for 20 years (1989 – 2009); and

WHEREAS, He has served the Animal & Veterinary Sciences Department, College of Agriculture, and this University with great distinction; and

WHEREAS, He has diligently served and provided leadership on committees at all levels, including the Arabian Advisory Committee, College of Agriculture Educational Assessment Committee, and University and College of Agriculture RTP committees; and

WHEREAS, He developed the Equine Educational Outreach Program producing cooperative efforts with the private sector and other institutions to promote the Arabian Horse Industry in Southern California; and

WHEREAS, He is a true teacher scholar who has directed numerous undergraduate and graduate research endeavors with over 30 publications and 16 presentations to his credit; and

WHEREAS, He served the University as Associate Director of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, developed and coordinated distance learning courses to UC Davis, CSU San Luis Obispo, and CSU Fresno; and

WHEREAS, He has taught fifteen different courses and is a highly valued colleague in the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences; and

WHEREAS, He has served as Associate Department Chair; and

WHEREAS, He has served with esteem and professionalism, representing the University as a member and officer of World Wide Pet Industry Association, Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, World Wide Pet Supply Association, Pierce College Horse Advisory Committee, California State Horseman’s Association, Animal Welfare Advisory Board, and Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society, Association of Equine Sports Medicine, California Thoroughbred Farm Manager’s Association; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona unanimously express its deepest appreciation for his many years of untiring service to the students and faculty of the University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the title of “Professor Emeritus” be bestowed upon this distinguished faculty member; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Professor Robert E. Bray in recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions, and that it be permanently recorded in the Minutes and Archives of the Academic Senate.

Ernest J. Cioffi

WHEREAS, Professor Ernest J. Cioffi have faithfully served as a lecturer in the Psychology and Sociology Department since 1994; and

WHEREAS, He has taught a wide variety of courses, effectively drawing upon his rich professional background and his many contacts from off-campus, who came as guests to his classes, in order to make abstract material more meaningful and relevant to his students; and

WHEREAS, He has remained professionally active, presenting his own work, as well as the results of research with Cal Poly Pomona colleagues, at professional meetings; and

WHEREAS, He published a text that he used for several years in teaching Social Organization; and

WHEREAS, He has added to the efforts to internationalize the campus by facilitating short-term training programs at Cal Poly Pomona for international groups and encouraging international students to attend Cal Poly Pomona; and

WHEREAS, He has been a gracious colleague and enhanced professional camaraderie among lecturers and with our office staff; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona unanimously express its deepest appreciation for his many years of dedicated

service to the students and his colleagues of the University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the title of “Lecturer Emeritus” be bestowed upon this lecturer; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Professor Ernest J. Cioffi in recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions, and that it be permanently recorded in the Minutes and Archives of the Academic Senate.

David M. Cooley

WHEREAS, Professor David Cooley has rendered distinguished service to the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona for 30 years (1979-2009); and

WHEREAS, He has served the Department of Communication, College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, and this University with great distinction; and

WHEREAS, He has been instrumental in the development of COM DAY, the Communication’s annual celebration of the accomplishments of its alumni and other distinguished practitioners in the field; and

WHEREAS, He has taught while at Cal Poly Pomona various courses in public speaking, advocacy and argument, organizational communication, advanced organizational communication, and special events planning; and

WHEREAS, He has served for 30 years as a Communication academic advisor and for many years also directed the Cal Poly Pomona’s Debate and Forensics team, which won numerous individual and team awards; and
