2.  recumbent (adj.): lying back or down (In the book, this word is used to describe the way some treebranches lean over the water, arching away from the tree trunk, as though they are “lying down”)

3.  morose (adj.): gloomy or withdrawn

4.  brusque (adj.): rudely abrupt or blunt

5.  contemplate (v): to think about something seriously and at length, especially in order to understand it more fully

6.  juncture (n): a place where two or more things join

7.  bindle (n): a small bundle of items rolled up inside a blanket and carried over the shoulder or on the back

8.  pugnacious (adj.): likes to fight or be aggressive

9.  scourge (n): anything that evokes discomfort or suffering

10.  mollify (v): to calm or soothe somebody who is angry or upset

1.  ominous (adj.): suggestive or indicative that something bad is going to happen or be revealed

2.  derogatory (adj.): insulting or negative

3.  slough (v): to shed or get rid of

4.  apprehensive (adj.): worried that something bad will happen

5.  disengage (adj.): to disconnect one thing from another or free something by disconnecting it

6.  complacent (adj.): satisfied, usually to a fault

7.  derision (n): mockery, ridicule

8.  reprehensible (adj.): worthy of blame and highly unacceptable

9.  bemused (adj.): confused, puzzled and unable to think clearly

10.  bleat (v): to make the cry of a sheep, goat, or calf

1.  aloof (adj.): uninvolved or unwilling to be involved with others, often (but not necessarily) out of a sense of superiority

2.  meager (adj.): small in quantity, substance, or size

3.  contemptuous (adj.): feeling or expressing strong dislike for somebody or something

4.  subside (v): to become less active or intense

5.  appraise (v): to determine the value of someone or something

6.  sullen (adj.): pouting often marked by a grumpy and unsociable unwillingness to socialize

7.  writhe( v): to make twisting and rolling movements with the body, especially as a result of pain

8.  monotonous (adj.): boring because it has been repeated so much for been unchanged for so long

9.  sulky (adj.) in a bad mood and refusing to communicate because of resentment (essentially the same as sullen)

10.  debris (n): fragments of something that has been destroyed or broken down
