Oedipus Rex Project

Task: Each group is responsible for holding Oedipus Rex Auditions in class. Each group has a certain number of assigned positions. They are listed below. A grade for the group will be assessed according to the presentation of the audition, a type-written explanation of the choices the group made, and a final type-written reaction by the directors (the due date will be given to you on the day of your presentation).

Presentation Days:

Responsibilities/Roles:

Each group needs to fill the following roles –

At least 2 people audition for Oedipus

At least 2 people audition for Kreon

At least 1 person auditions for Jocasta

At least 1 person auditions for Teirisias

At least 1 person auditions for Chorus

At least 2 directors

(Consider adding a person as a stand-in reader)

Requirements:

Along with the type-written reactions/explanations, groups are required to do the following:

All those auditioning have to have a significant passage memorized

All directors are to have a list of questions for those auditioning

All audition sessions are live, not taped, and all members are active in the presentation

All group members need to have identifying tags of some sort.

There is no time requirement; a whole class period will be set aside for each

group. The presentation must be done within the 50 minutes on your assigned day, however.

2 type-written papers – an explanation of the choices the group made (to be turned in on the day of the presentation), and a reaction to the auditions by the directors/group. Each paper should have the signature of the initial author and three editors.

Grading:

The grade will be a group grade, no exceptions. Grades will be based on the overall organization and execution of the presentation, the attention to detail and accuracy for the text, the creativity of the presentation, the content of the explanations/reactions, and the overall evidence of understanding of the play Oedipus Rex.

Some suggestions:

Just some thoughts for you. Identify one person to be a group leader (the groups are too big to have no individual leader and coordinator). Appoint a person to be the secretary who will then take notes as the decisions are made. This will help with writing the “Choices explanation.”

Consider having a large group discussion as to what roles you want to take and what responsibilities go along with each role. Those auditioning should then choose a persona and then a significant passage to recite in front of the directors; everyone should agree on the passages to be recited also. The directors should create a list of questions and casting expectations. These will help with the final director’s reaction.

Do your best to share the work – no one person or a couple persons should be doing all the work.
