Ode to Coca-Cola (a Shakespearian Sonnet)

By Ms. Dibble

Shall I compare thee to an American afternoon?

Thou art more fizzy and more sugared:

Many a foreigner seeks you out soon,

While on an exodus across Europe;

Sometime too hard the sun of Spain beams,

And often our limbs’ strength diminutive,

And every step bring thirst and mute screams,

By chance I see thou cold and expensive:

But your eternal sweetness shall not die,

Nor lose harmony in this hell from home,

Nor shall Pepsi beat though not as bubbly

When in my mind’s eye your splendor doth come.

So long as we travel across the sea,

So long you endure in sweet memory.

Pearl Harbor (8th grader)

Shall I compare thee to the depths of Hell,

Awoken in the quiet morning mist?

When all said and done, oh, few hopes may dwell;

Innocent are lost, by death you were kissed.

Deep in your dreams you quietly slept;

The sun jumped up and the sweet ocean rolled.

But from the skies the wrath of Evil crept,

And blood was shed by sailors young and old.

A day which will live in infamy true,

To forget this day would be a deep crime.

If you were there would you wish to undo,

And to say I love you one final time?

Through the easy times and through the harder;

On the seventh, remember Pearl Harbor.

Ode to Chocolate

Shall I compare thee to love’s first sweet kiss?

How lush is thy taste that makes my heart race.

I keep yearning for thee to give me bliss,

To feel thy bittersweet essence’s embrace.

The first touch of cupid’s arrow may be

Blissful and may fill one with happiness.

Sadness and heartbreaks will e’er follow thee,

Leaving only despair and emptiness,

But it worketh the opposite with thee;

At first may it seem bitter and devoid,

Then ecstasy shall slowly conquer thee,

With desire filling the heart without void.

So long as men can taste or mouths can chew,

So long lives the bean, thou shan’t say adieu.

Shall I compare thee to sweet mystery?

In my head thou art an island, unknown.

My sleep thou command, weaving webs around me;

Through tangled visions I wander alone.

In fairytale courts and on timeless seas,

Arguments the Red Queen and Alice howl

Through viridian skies and sapphire trees,

Confusions and delusions ‘round me prowl.

Insensible legends in few short minutes

And thy visits to outlandish lands,

With hardly time to reflect upon it,

Thou watches it wash away from the sand.

From fabulous illusions thou has seen,

Though awakens for be it only a dream.

As darkness approaches, her sanity fades.

Gradually, her laughter fills the air.

Shuffling in circles, her bed left unmade.

Whispering nonsense, talking to her chair.

Restless and paranoid, she seeks shelter.

From what you may ask, she will never tell.

Eyes moving, searching for an intruder.

Corner to corner, it quietly dwells.

Frantic and distraught, she thrashes about.

It chuckles, amused at her behavior.

As morning draws near, it stops as she shouts.

It leaves after one last scream of pure fear.

Doctor assured everything will be all right.

Safe and sound now, but it return tonight.

Sonnet 001

Oh, how I love the way you make me feel,

the way you brush my face, just so lightly.

No matter what occasion, it’s all real;

you even make my eyes shine so brightly.

From morning ‘til night, together we are

twenty-four-seven, there when I need you.

Throughout my days you are never too far;

even when I’m down, you know what to do.

I’ve learned so much since the first day we met,

from the simplest of things, to intricate.

After all we’ve learned, I know I’m set;

you are dear to me, and so delicate.

It’s said that a dog is man’s best friend…

but makeup will always remain a trend.

Frustration

I do not know how to write a sonnet;

At first it sounded easy but it is not.

See, look! Sonnet only rhymes with bonnet

And now this poem is tied in a knot.

Fourteen lines with alphabet spread about—

Quatrain and octave; it’s just too much to take!

So many subjects I just want to shout…

Drowning in couplets like I’m in a lake.

If only I could just do this thing right,

Share a story or make something awesome.

I guess my dreams are stranded like a kite,

And now all I can write is opossum

So down to the last chunk; time to sum up:

I know I’m bad at sonnets, so hush!

Ode to Procrastination

Me sitting here, it’s time for midnight fun:

The hand’t not yet twelve, yet eyes have almost bowed,

Several tasks at hand still left unbegun;

Procrastination, why you fail me now,

When I have patroned you so loyally for years?

Passing notes in math have got me this far,

Yet somehow my weight in papers brings tears;

Since freshman year, they’ve really raised the bar.

Can you not see all the pain you have caused?

Eleven fifty-nine is my ringtone,

I’ll finish later, or in prior class,

Or else I’ll fight against monsters of woe;

Maybe I’ll be better the next time around,

Or maybe I’ll procrastinate for now.
