October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month
In October, classroom guidance lessons will focus on bullying prevention. Students are learning the definition of bullying, including the three key parts, of the term.
Common definitions of "bullying" involve a broad range of unwanted physical, verbal, and social behaviors, the intent to harm, the repetition of confrontation, and the imbalance of power between the bully(s) and target(s).
(Bullying is defined by stopbullying.gov as: Unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves an imbalance of power. Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Bullying behaviors happen more than once.)
Students are also learning about what to do if they are the target of bullying behavior (Stop, Talk & Walk) and how to be an upstander, (be a buddy - interrupt - speak out - tell an adult).
What should do if you think your child is being bullied?
Experts caution parents to investigate the issue before they react. First, calm down. Take time to investigate. Ask your child for the full story, and find out what role your child has played. Only after you’ve done your research, contact your child’s school or law enforcement. http://www.greatschools.org/gk/videos/bullying-eight-takeaways-emily-bazelon-maurice-elias-2/
Red Ribbon Week is the last week in October - more information and detailed Spirit Week Schedule to come.
STUDENT ABSENCES/EXCUSES/DISMISSALS
Students who are absent must bring a note from their parent or guardian within three days of returning to school stating the reason for the absence.
Academic standards, which have been set by the SOL’s, make it very important that your child attend school all day, every day. In order for your child to be successful, regular attendance must be top priority. We ask that you make every effort to see that your child attends school daily. This includes arriving on time and remaining at school until dismissal. Virginia law requires that we monitor daily attendance; this includes tardies to school and early dismissals.
Congratulations to the following students for being at school
