Unit 1 – Learning Outcomes

By completing this unit candidates will develop the knowledge and understanding of the sports industry in the UK.

Sports Related Scenario

In 2001 the International Olympic Committee members elected Beijing the HostCity for theGames of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008. The awarding of the Olympic Games to Beijing givesChina the opportunity to promote and develop its sports industry.

China does have experience of organising sports events. It has played host to the Asian

Games, the World Summer University Games and quite a few world championships, along withChina's mini-Olympics - the national games every four years. However, as Yang Shu’an

(Sports Chief of the State Administration of Chinese Sports) acknowledges, the Olympic

Games would be in a class of its own:

"To well organize all the 28 Olympic sports, it requires a lot of qualified staff,

proficient in sports management and good at speaking foreign languages. If

necessary, we would send staff to study in international sports federations”.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games hasalready estimated that by the year 2008 there will be more than 30 departments and 4,000 staffunder its umbrella. The sports chief has sent his staff to the international federations to obtain an understanding of the sports industry in those countries. You have been asked toprovide information that will ensure that the Chinese committee obtain an understanding of:

  • The size, diversity and structure of the sports industry
  • The value of sport in the UK
  • The objectives and funding of private, public and voluntary sports organisations
  • The reasons for growth in different sports
  • The range of employment opportunities within the sports industry.

Complete all the following tasks that make up this assignment.

Task 1

Assessment Objective: Describe the major components of the sports industry.

Task: China's sports industry is developing rapidly, especially in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. However, you need to ensure that all the Chinese Olympic Committee (OC) members have a clear understanding of whatconstitutes the ‘sports industry’.

Components of the sports industry could include:

  • sport retail
  • sport spectating
  • facility provision
  • sports coaching
  • sport development
  • sport tourism
  • professional sport
  • sport related gambling
  • sport medicine
  • health and fitness

Descriptors should include:

  • definition/purpose
  • scale/size
  • target groups, services offered and functions performed
  • impact

Your task is to describe all of these components and use examples from your local areato illustrate each one.

Task 2

Assessment Objective: Explain three inter-relationships between different components of the sports industry.

Task: The Chinese OC will also need to gain an understanding of the interrelationships that existbetween the different components of the sports industry.

Your task is to explain the following THREE interrelationships:

  • TWO directly linked operations where the two components are linked but one benefitsmore than the other:
  • ONE symbiotic interrelationship where both components are dependant on each otherto survive:

Examples of inter-relationships:

  • sports spectating and sports retail
  • sports medicine and professional sport
  • sports coaching and sports development
  • sports spectating and sport related gambling

Task 3

Assessment Objective: Explain the value of sport in the UK.

Task: The Chinese OC need to gain an understanding of the scale and economic importance ofsport in the UK. The students will then be able to appreciate the contribution that sport couldmake to their own economy.

Your task is to explain the value of sport in the UK bydiscussing the terms below:

Value of sport in terms of:

  • benefiting the economy
  • benefiting the community
  • improving education and lifelong learning
  • improving health and well being

Task 4

Assessment Objective: Analyse the key differences and similarities betweenthe objectives and funding of, public, private and voluntary sector organisations.

Task: The sports market in the UK is a complex one yet it is essential that the Chinese OC startto gain an appreciation of how the supply side of the market is a mixture of organisations fromthe private, public and voluntary sectors.

Your task is to focus your investigation on THREE sport organisations, one from each ofthe public, private and voluntary sectors. Examples may be used from a national or local level.

  • standards of facilities
  • pricing structure
  • extent of partnerships with other sectors

Examples of key differences and similarities between funding:

  • grants – government, non-government
  • loans – from members, supporters or financial institutions

Task 5

Assessment Objective: Explain the reasons for growth in three sports.

Task: Despite the worldwide popularity of Chinese kung fu, the most popular sports in China arebasketball and soccer. In the Olympic Games, China performs especially well in diving,gymnastics, volleyball, and table tennis. With the country's high population density andovercrowded cities, the space-saving games of table tennis and badminton have become themost popular urban sports in China. Even though bowling, billiards (snooker), and tennis arealso popular, the expensive fees these sports cost make them widely inaccessible. Golf isreserved for only the extremely wealthy.

Growth could be explained in terms of:

  • make sure that you practise your presentation beforehand
  • be prepared to answer questions

Task 6

Assessment Objective: Investigate the range of job opportunities available in the sports industry and describe three job roles.

Task: There are a diverse number of jobs available in the UK sports industry, many of which will beunfamiliar to the ChineseOC.

Your task is to briefly describe the range of jobs that are being advertised in your localarea.

This will include looking at the:

  • type of jobs on offer (e.g. full time, part time, casual, seasonal)
  • employment grade (e.g. director, managerial, technical, operative)
  • diversity of jobs available (e.g. leisure centre manager, sport development officers, personaltrainers, fitness equipment sales advisor, canoe instructor)

To reflect the diversity of the local sports market, select THREE of these jobs.

Your task is todescribe for each one:

  • the nature of employment (full-time, part-time, temporary), including the role and keyresponsibilities (typical activities), conditions of service and rates of pay
  • purpose of job
  • the personal and technical skills required
  • the academic and professional qualifications needed
  • the application process
  • progression opportunities
