Practice Placement Guidance
Pre-Placement Information
(May be included in a letter to the student). / Completed
Practice Educator’s contact name and number, dates of placement, offer of pre placement visit.
Pre placement reading, basic information in preparation for the placement. Consider a minimum amount of high quality targeted information such as - NICE guidelines, specific articles and /or chapters in journals or books.
Service information leaflet that may include: The core business, philosophy of the team / department, team members, web address.
Reporting time and location, maps and car parking for pre-placement visit and day one.
Accommodation (if applicable).
Dress code and name/ID badge.
Invitation to students to make a note of any outstanding personal learning outcomes and to self disclose specific educational support needs.
Education facilities available, library, study areas, reference literature, computer access.
Documentation required for access for IT in your organisation.
Staff facilities e.g. canteen, proximity to shops, showers.
Honorary contract forms if required.
Starting and finishing times (first and subsequent days).
Use of transport on placement e.g. cycle sheds, bus stops
Preparation for arrival of student / Completed
Review student’s information from their introductory letter - stage of training, previous placement history with any unmet learning objectives, CV etc.
Organise locker allocation, keys etc. if available
Check that your local Orientation/Student Information File is up to date. Arrange attendance at Trust Induction as applicable.
Draft time table for week one. Block out time in your diary for, meeting the student, local orientation, weekly supervision sessions, half way and final assessment.
Activation of SMART card and/or organisation of IT training (if applicable)
Review the UEA Practice Education Handbook with particular reference to the practice learning outcomes for your student. ( )
Student Orientation- Day one / Completed
Meet student and introduce to team members.
Check ‘Student Passport’ (DBS Clearance, Occupational health clearance, membership of professional body and mandatory training).
Orientation to building, & key department areas. Toilets, kitchen facilities, staff room, study resources, safe place for personal valuables – lockers, security procedures. Names board/use of own & dept diary – booking in / out
Department information-changing facilities, staff room, start / finish times and lunch hour, other facilities
Fire procedure, exits, fire points, break glass buttons.
Reporting procedure/ support – who to go to in case of educator’s absence and any other local arrangements for pastoralsupport.
Negotiate placement supervision arrangements and CPD hours.
Negotiate outline of weekly timetable.
Process for sickness absence - clarification between student and practice educator.
Location of policies and procedures file – identify key elements- health records policy, confidentiality, manual handling, equality and diversity, reporting concerns/whistle blowing, and safeguarding.
Department safety, incident reporting, near misses, first aid.
Use of telephones, bleeps & emergency numbers, buddy systems, contacts, door codes.
Home visit protocol, including lone working policy, using transport and mobile phone use.
Student information file location.
Student Orientation- Days two to five / Completed
First supervision session including clarification of the student’s preferred learning styles and use of reflective practice approaches.
Work with the student to develop their learning contract through negotiation of key learning objectives for thestudent’s learning on this placement.
Recording of patient interventions, note and record keeping and access to records, IT systems, standardised list of terms and abbreviations used in health record notes.
Confirm dates for half-way & final assessment report times
Clarify placement project commitments – case study, portfolio, service improvement, quality initiatives etc.
Placement evaluation – final week / Completed
Complete all paperwork and sign off as an accurate reflection of performance.
Complete final assessment with the student.
Return paperwork to student and keep a copy for your records.
Arrange final meeting with student to discuss their - placement experience, future practice placement learning outcomes, and student feedback to the placement area.
Check student returns any departmental resources; ID badge etc
Complete University feedback survey
Post placement evaluation

Review the student feedback and consider any implications for your own performance as an educator and for service delivery.
Consider if the students learning experience could have been enhanced in any way.
Consider if your model of practice education is meeting the needs of service and education, e.g. student/educator ratios, professional mix of students within the team, interprofessional learning and working.
