Formal Academic Training

Dr. Mehlmauer was graduated from Los AngelesPierceCollege, Woodland Hills, California, in 1964, with anAA degree in Music. He later graduated from CSULB (California State University, Long Beach) in 1970, with a BA in Anthropology, and finally from Bernadean University, Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1974, with an ND degree in Naturopathic Medicine.

Location

After graduating in Anthropology, Leonard was introduced to Iridology via the teachings of Bernard Jensen, DC, ND. He traveled to and lived at Dr. Jensen’s Hidden Valley Ranch in Escondido, California, in 1970. In the spring of 1972, while still in Naturopathic school, he began professional residency in Iridology and Holistic Health Counseling under Dr. John Luly, Jr., DC, in San Diego. The next year he opened his own office. By mid-1983, Dr. Mehlmauer had relocated to Los Angeles, where his business was given the name “Grand Medicine” by his spiritual teacher, Avatar Adi Da Samraj. In February 1992, he moved to Camarillo, north of Los Angeles, worked inSan Diegoin 2003, then in 2004 moved to his current locationnear Las Vegas, Nevada.

Professional Focus

Dr. Mehlmauer’s clinical work has been oriented to promotive health (as opposed to prevention or treatment, which are “disease” orientations) in the context of the Adidam Radical Healing principles of Avatar Adi Da Samraj. He practices and advocates patient health self-responsibility and the high-raw Vegetarian diet, finding that, since the gross physical body is a food body, diet purity (along with life-positive lifestyle)is essentialto good health. He has also created a series of protocols in Natural Health around his company’s GranMed herb formulas.

The focus of his professional work has been (1) developmental and scientific studies in the Eyology sciences of Iridology and Sclerology, and (2) educating healers in Eyology, in Naturopathic, and in the Adidam Radical Healing principles. In the Eyology field he has been called a theorist and visionary for his work (e.g., the seven branches of Iridology, Sclerology statistical research, and development of local and worldwide industry standards), and for encouragingcooperation among Eyologists.

Teaching

A persuasive speaker, Dr. Leonard has lectured on various topics related to Eyologyand Natural Healthfor a variety of audiences, including from Whole Foods Markets(the world’s largest Natural Foods chain) and to the variousInternational Iridology Congresses and Expos. Since 1995, his teaching work has included a series of lectures, seminars, intros, intensives, and coursesof various lengths in Sclerology and Iridologyat Naturopathic Universities and otherlocations in Canada, the USA, Australia, Italy, the Philippines, and other countries.

Media

Dr. Mehlmauer has appeared on many media shows, including radio appearances, his own “GRAND MEDICINE” radio show on KFOX, Los Angeles, local TV stations, the nationally syndicated FOX Family Channel, and on national educational PBS-TV.

Research

Grand Medicine’s archive of client Eyology photos and digital images has provided fertile ground for research into the Eyologysciences. Research continues there in MS, diabetes, and various diseases as they may appear in the eyes. A paper on diabetes as seen in the irises (written with Dr. Saida Isabekova and other colleagues), was presented and accepted by scientific bodies in Hong Kong and Russia. That paper’s successor is now in process as we work on a much broader research study encompassing the full range of this disease as seen in the eyes.

Publication

With his wife, Nenita Sarmiento, Dr. Mehlmauer has authored a number of booksand maps for the Eyology profession and for the public, including:

  • Nourishment, a 500-page manual of healthy living
  • The acclaimed Sclerology textbook, SCLEROLOGY - A New View of An Ancient Art
  • Principles of Healthy Living, a booklet outline of The BIG 7 and the LQFs (Low Quality Foods)
  • The peer-reviewed Atlas of Iris Signs, a 30-page summary of markings in the science of Iridology
  • A number of course companion books, including the highly praised Sclerology Course Guidebook
  • MapBook of Physical Iridology, a 50-page comprehensive guide to locating bodily areas in the irises
  • The GREAT Liquid Diet, dealing with health maintenance, healing chronic disease, geriatrics and longevity

Two more major books in the industry, IRIS-1, Physical Iridology, and IRIS-2, Personality Iridology, are currently being prepared for publication.

Industry Cooperation

Early in 2003, Dr. Mehlmauer was approached by top Eyology industry people to edit a new magazine and Ezine. This instrument would help organize and strengthen the position of the Eyology sciences in the fields of science and medicine, provide practitioners with useful information, and make a major gesture toward cooperation among North American schools toward the creation of industry standards and industry self-regulation. The name of the new vehicle was the International Journal of Iridology, released in the spring of 2004.

Science Diplomacy

In 1995, Dr. Mehlmauer introduced Sclerology to Canada. Earlier that same year, he envisioned and then established the World Eyology Guild, a global unifying organization of Eyology healers. This was followed in 2000by the launch of World Eyology News, a quarterly industry magazine. He thus coined the term “Eyology”, which is coming into common use in the industry. In 2002, he presented his “Index of Iridology Terms” to the industry as a gesture toward formally standardizing Iridology terminology.

Dr. Mehlmauer has appeared in articles and publications here and abroad, including Harper’s Bazaar (Sept. 1987), as one of the nation’s top six nutritionists and L.A.’s best, and the French publication Madame Figaro (issue #319, April 1990) as “California’s #1 nutritionist”. In May of 2002, Dr. Mehlmauer met with officials of the Philippine government and top Iridologists in that country toward establishing Eyology as fully and officially accepted health evaluation practice. On a trip to Russia (2002), Dr. Mehlmauer introduced Sclerology to that country via Drs. Evgeny Velkhover and Iosef Makarchuk, Russia’s top Iridologists.
