6. Describe lessons observed: Students are led in a discussion of Cro-Magnon man and his way of life. John is very attentive during this discussion and has several comments to make about life in the Cro-Magnon era. Teacher asks class to write a short (3 paragraph) diary of a day in their own Cro-Magnon life. John looks at classmates for clues of what to do to get started. He takes out supplies and prepares with pencil and paper. He sits and stares briefly but then begins to write. Teacher approaches John and suggests he list ideas first. He appears to not hear her but after she walks away he begins to write random words on a list. A non-verbal cue is used by aide when she passes by to keep John moving. He is able to write his thoughts but does not want to write with the pencil. He raises his hand and asks if he can use the Alpha Smart to write. Teacher gives permission. John works on assignment until he has three paragraphs and raises his hand for a peer editor to check his work. After his peer editor checks his written work, John makes corrections and asks if he can go to the RSP room to complete a final draft. Teacher instructs John to save his paragraphs in the Alpha Smart and he can print it out when he goes to RSP next period.
Comments: John appeared to be engaged in this lesson. He was more distracted when asked to work independently but able to successfully complete this assignment.
