Objective 12.7 (012): Task 1 Assessment Description

Level 1 and 2 – Beginning Low - High

Description of Task: Understand Road Signs and Signals

Student will, orally or in writing, identify and demonstrate understanding of 10 signs, signals, and/or warning signs when shown pictures.

Prepare students for the assessment:

  1. Students should practice naming all of the signs and signals on the test, as well as additional signs that will not be tested. You should also practice what the sign means or what behavior is required when they see the sign. Level 1 students should practice matching names to signs. The sign names can be on the board or students can match name strips to pictures of signs.
  2. Practice asking a variety of oral and written comprehension questions to level 2 students to determine if they really know what the sign means. The test uses “yes”/”no” questions to test comprehension, but you can also ask information (“wh”) questions. Level 1 students should hear and read statements about each sign. They should indicate if the sentences are correct, or not, by answering/circling “yes” or “no”.
  3. Include the more difficult words on your weekly vocabulary lists. Give students ample practice in various modalities to ensure success.

Assessment Instructions for Examiner:

  1. Ask students to clear the desk or table where they will be assessed.
  2. Explain to the students that they need to name 10 signs and/or signals (level 1 students can select their answers from a word box). Level 1 students will then read a sentence related to each sign, and circle “yes” (true) or “no” (false). Level 2 students need to read a question, and write “yes” or “no”. Ask the students to read the sentences and questions carefully before marking their answer. Let the students know that the 1 and 0 on the test is for the teacher to use for checking the answers.
  3. Give students a reasonable amount of time to answer all 10 questions. Students may not use their notes or other practice materials. Collect the papers when they’re finished, making sure their names and the date are on the paper.
  4. Use the Answer Key to check the papers. Circle 1 for a “correct and comprehensible” answer. Circle 0 for an “incorrect or incomprehensible” answer. This is the rubric prescribed by CASAS.
  5. If level 2 students write a correct and comprehensible description of what asign means, rather than just a sign’s name, they are eligible for full points.
