Activity Corner

Well, we thought the snow would never end; now will the rain ever end?! One extreme to another! Let’s not let the rain or the weather hamper our spirits. Remember April showers bring May flowers! We will have all those beautiful flowers to look forward to & by the amount of rain we’ve had there should be a ton of them!

Hope all of you had fun with the afternoon of crafts. We will be doing more hands on activities in June when we get into our fourth of July crafts. Unfortunately, we will be unable to go dancing in St. Peter this month (because our entertainers for the Birthday Party could only come that same day) but we will continue goingonce again in June. I know many of you had fun with the M.S.U. student’s Easter Party, and going to see the River Blender’s! How about those “organic cowboys”? They were very good weren’t they? We’ll be having them again, so keep an eye open for their name in following months! Some of you might not have been able to go out for pie at Baker’s Square last month, so make sure you sign up early if you’d like to go to Rapidanfor someDam Store pie! We will try to go in June as well so those of you who really want to go can do so! If you liked eating out at “Happy Chef”, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the home cooking at Uncle Albert’s in Eagle Lake too. Let us know if you’d like to go!

Hope all you enjoyed Daniel’s violin and piano recital. Bobby will be playing for us again this May as well as Joe Gangi. Make sure you let them know how much we appreciate their talent and kindness!

Starting in June the book mobile will only be stopping on the Oak Terrace West’s Independent side because their new bus is just too big to park in our parking lot. If you want to get a book (or return one) just ask and we will happily walk with you over to pick one out. Sorry for the inconvenience.

My mamma always said:

"For the mother is and must be, whether she knows it or not, the greatest, strongest and most lasting teacher her children have."

“Treat people with the same kindness and respect, from the janitor up to the CEO. You are no better or worse than anyone”

Once upon a memory someone wiped away a tear, held me close and loved me, Thank you, Mother dear."

Happy Mother’s Day!!

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods."
The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

Guess Who??

This One Is For Grandmothers!

Grandmothers are mothers who are

grand,

Restoring the sense that our most

precious things

Are those that do not change much over

time.

No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
More inclined than most to grant the

wings on which we fly off to enchanted lands.

Though grandmothers must serve as second mothers, helping out with young and restless hearts
Each has all the patience wisdom brings, remembering our passions more than others, soothing us with old and well-honed arts.

Nicholas Gordon

Don’t forget to thank all our veterans on May 26th !

The bugle echoes shrill and sweet,
But not of war it sings to-day.
The road is rhythmic with the feet
Of men-at-arms who come to pray.

Above their wreath-strewn graves we kneel,
They kept the faith and fought the fight.
Through flying lead and crimson steel
They plunged for Freedom and the Right.
May we, their grateful children, learn
Their strength, who lie beneath this sod,
Who went through fire and death to earn
At last the accolade of God.

Spotlight on:

– Russell Miller

Russell was born on August 10th, 1925 at his parents home in Rapidan, Mn. He was the youngest of four brothers & four sisters! Sadly he is the only one living out of all these siblings now.

Russell went to elementary school in Rapidan until they moved to a farm near Porter, MN. He finished thru eighth grade in Porter, but took a bus to Canby to finish 9th thru 12th grades and graduated from Canby High school in 1943! After graduation he enlisted in the Army and served two years as private first class infantry, unfortunately spending as much time in hospitals as he did in the war. Russell started out in Normandy where he was wounded in the shoulder from shrapnel & spent two months in an army hospital in England. The second time he was wounded in Germany and spent two months in a hospital, then got on a hospital ship were he was shipped to an army hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan!

After returning home he worked on the family farm and also attended Mankato Commercial College for about a year. He worked at Dotson foundry for seven years and for the Mankato Postal Service for thirty years.

Russell started dating his future wife Carol when he returned from the war. He knew her from riding the bus together from Porter to Canby(she was a year younger than him in school). They were married in 1948 by a Lutheran minister. They had three children. Their oldest son, David, works at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington. He’s married to Renee and they have three grown children. They’re second child was Bette. She is married to Doug Berndt, and they live in Janesville and have two grown children. Stan is the youngest son and he lives and works in Eagan. Russell nowhas five grand children and four great grandchildren to brag about!

Russell and Carol were married for sixty years. Carol sadly passed away at the Mankato hospital in 2008!

Russell, Carol and their youngest son traveled to see the beaches of Normandy and on the way home also toured Ireland. He and his wife did other traveling in the U.S.as well, especially to Seattle, Washington to visit their oldest son and his family!

In Russell’s spare time he enjoyed golfing and fishing. Some of his fondest memories are of fishing trips he took! He did a great deal of yard work over the years and repair work around their home. A favorite past time of his is to watch the Twins; he especially enjoys it when they win! Russell is a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church on Marsh St. in Mankato!

He has been at Oak Terrace since February of this year and says he likes it here, so if you haven’t introduced yourself to him, make sure you do so!
